I just drained the oil last night and put Castrol 5w30 in. I filled it with 4.6 quarts instead of 4.4. When I try to get a reading off the dipstick it shows the oil level to only be at 3/4 the way up, but not above or at the second dot like it should. The oil on the dipstick is of a thin opaque strip. On my last oil change with Castrol 5w20 it was thick and dark/brownish and read above the second dot.

What's going on here?

Overall the car shifts smoother, the headlights are brighter (weird but true), the car sounds smooth at high rpms and the engine isn't near as hot when I get done driving it as it used to be.

The only other bad thing I notice is the idle sounds rough when I have AC on.

Anybody that's running 5w30 please comment.

the amount of oil you get out of an engine can change depending on how long you let it drain and other factors. So the fact that you put more oil in doesn't really mean much, I would keep adding until the level is near the top notch.

Many oils have different colours, but they should be somewhat close. I find all new oil hard to read on our dipstick.
