The normal kit includes 2-piece rotors, forged (better than billet) 4-piston calipers, stainless steel brake line, EBC Green Stuff pads, and all the necessary mounting hardware. Total price: $750 plus shipping. Mine was a little more with the options I got. Shipping from from Southern California to Northern California was around $30.

I got a one-time deal from Fizz Autosports on the Teins since someone had cancelled their order after they'd already arrived. $925 shipped.

The car will eventually see a track. One of my friends took me for a ride in his race prepared Mustang and I was amazed at how much fun it was. I'm hoping to be able to take it to Laguna Seca and Infineon (formerly Sear Point), and possibly Thunder Hill and Willows. I wouldn't do it for competition as my car is my daily driver. I'd just be doing it for the fun of it. I've also got a Progress rear sway bar/tie bar on the back to help cut down on the understeer. It handles like a totally different car.

Minimum wheel size for this kit is 16". I've got 17" wheels with a 37mm offset and there is very good clearance between them. I could probably fit a pinky between the caliper and the wheel.

am I the only one that noticed the smiley face arrangement of the parts in the first pic? LOL.

what is the overall diameter of the new calipers/rotor?

I changed to the OZ superlegerra 15x7 wheels, and there is a LOT more clearance around the rotor, about an extra 1" or so. I really don't wanna go up from 15" wheels (tires are cheap in 15" :D )

I really would like to upgrade the calipers at some point to shave off some unsprung weight and get a stiffer pedal feel.

I'm not sure about overall diameter with the caliper, but the rotors themselves are 12.2"

Thank you for all of the positive feedback. I am really happy now that my suspensions pretty much done now. I can't wait to be able to get on these babies and see what they can do.

Ok, stupid question. Why only replace the front brakes, are the rear's just for the e-brake or are they just not as important as the fronts?

SmoothOperator
03-27-2003, 06:52 PM
I believe the front brakes do 60% of the work. Rears do 40%.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

weight distribution on the car at rest is about 60/40.

when you hit the brakes, inertia causes MORE weight to transfer up front, so you get something like 80/20 during hard braking. so to reduce stopping distances, the front brakes are most important. Also, fade occurs almost exclusively in the front brakes as the rear brakes are always significantly cooler than the fronts.

However, it's still important to upgrade both front & rear brakes to ensure that your brake bias isn't thrown off (brake bias = the front/rear split of brake force) this is important for braking around turns and important for minimiznig dive during moderate braking.

Quicksilver

The rear brake upgrade isn't available, but should just replace the stock rotor with a larger 2-piece unit. It's should just relocate the existing caliper with a bracket that move if further out. In theory is should be marginally lighter and offer some enhanced braking. Mostly it would be to balance out the look of the front and the rear.

Like it was stated earlier, about 80% of braking will be handled by the front during heavy braking due to the weight shifting to the front wheels. The proportioning between the front and rear should not need to be altered. I asked a lot of the same questions to Sherwin before I was sold on the kit. If you really need a more technical explaination of it, DocofMind should be able to explain in the correct terminology.

Looks good, I am standing by for an update. Did you consider the cryogenic (sp?) freezing? I am and not the drilling or slotting.

Keep us updated.

Did you consider the cryogenic (sp?) freezing?

You know, you may have stumped me. I believe they are cryogenically frozen, but I could be wrong. Doc? Wanna chime in on that?

I am standing by for an update.

Again, I'll have the full write up shortly, but I just got back burnishing the brakes and rotors now that I've got 500 miles on it. I performed several stops from 65mph, starting at 40% brake pedal and progressively adding more braking with each successive pass. The brakes performed like champs. No fade. No uneven braking. And no lockup on any of the wheels, even during the heaviest braking. It also kept to an almost perfectly straight line, requiring only minimal adjustments.

While I don't have scientific data, I've got no doubt that I've significanly reduced my braking distances. It feels like I've got Z06 brakes now. It may take me a while to get used to being able to go deeping into corners before braking... :D

So can we get a view of the whole car now as it looks.
I want to see how these look in passing and under Superleggeras which I just ordered..

Thanks for this post! I looked on
Wilwoods page and it does not even show that these exist for this car. What car did you order them for to be able to use them?

I know people have been wanting to see pictures of my whole car now that the brakes are installed, but the weather here in Northern California has been mostly cloudy or raining every day this month. I've been waiting for some decent weather, and a chance to borrow my friend's nicer digital camera (mine's a $100 cheapy). The only pictures I have are cloudy day/grainy pre-install pictures, but you can get the idea from these what OZs and Teins look like on an Si. Here ya go:

Well, I hope to have pics in the next few weeks for you guys of those brakes and O.Z. Crono Evolutions, but for now I've got a couple of questions. Is the Tein Type SS setup a better deal for the money than the Type Flex? I am pricing the Type Flex right now for my car, along with these brakes, Energy Suspension motor mount inserts, Tanabe Super Hyper Medallion exhaust, and the D3 designs Chassis Stiffening Kit (if it ever comes out). If you can't tell, I've got a little money to burn, just got the rest of my enlistment bonus from the Navy and was planning on using it for this stuff (~$5500). Any opinions on all of the above items would be greatly apreciated.

Hamlet, is that a Buddy Club body kit that I see on your car? And what are those wheels?

In my case it was. I got them for a steal of a price at $925. Sorry to say, but this was a one-time offer on one set of SS. If it had been best price I could find for SS ($1050) vs. best price on Type Flex ($1580), I probably would have gotten the SS set again. For that extra $530 you get the ability to adjust ride height and spring preload independantly. You also get pillowball upper mounts (camber plates) which not only give you adjustable camber, but also give you a more solid connection between the car and the suspension. The spring rates on the Flex's are also a little higher by about 25-30%. And you also gain the ability to add the EDFC control module which the SS won't accept according to Tein.

If those additional features are important to you, then spend the extra money for them. For me, it wasn't worth the extra money especially considering the deal I got.

yup, that's a buddy club kit on my car (well, a replica anyway).

I think the kit looks great, except i wish the body shop didn't paint the grills silver along with the rest of the kit (i should have told them that in advance) because i think the kit just looks better with black mesh.. but oh well.. still looks nice to me.

and the wheels are Kosei K1 racing in 16x7.5 that i had powdercoated black. Less than 15lbs each and about $150 each.. so pretty good performance/price deal.. and i think they look pretty good again..
