Free is good! That said, I'm of the Bel school myself... Valentine One's are great, but clunky in design and seriously overpriced. The new Passports are actually supposed to be nice units again, but again, overpriced. Unidens are alright in my experience, as well. I've been "naked" since I got my EP though, as I tossed the power outlet in favor of an XM radio unit from Delphi, and haven't taken the time or $$$ to get another one to put in the center console blank.

is a little clunky due to its old school brick design. But the newest iteration slims down the case considerably.

However, there are 2 things I like about my V1 and I would pay that much again if mine was stolen.

1. Directional arrows - they are the only one in the market now w/ arrows showing you where the threat is and I believe they have the patent on this. Thus no one can copy it in the near future. Cheapo and expensive detectors alike just go braapppp.

2. The remote display duplicates all the information on the main unit. Compare this to the Escort model which has like 2 lights or something. You can't even compare.

I've my V1 unit mounted above the rear view mirror and the remote display mounted in the open storage space below the radio. At night the main unit doesn't light up like a Christmas tree and the people outside can't see the remote display unit.

Sure V1 is expensive. But it sure is the best. Don't bash it till you actually use it. Most of the time when my V1 goes off, there's a threat around. Cheapo BEL detector I used before (<$100) would beep, brap and maybe fart too for no reason.
