I tried to order tires from tirerack.com today. They were 195/50VR-15 Yokohama AVS ES100's. I bought them to put on my Integra LS rims. I currently have 195/50/15's on them. Tirerack said that they wouldn't ship them to me because it was unsafe to put these tires on my car. I had to tell them it was for a 90 civic with Integra LS rims before they would send them. Can anyone explain why? Any info would be great. Now tirerack has me scared to put these tires on. Please help.

They probably thought that you were going to put in on a heavier car. Did you use the 02 si or the Integra to look up tires that fit?

Anyways the 195x50x15 ES100's are load rated for 1047 lbs. That's actually THE lowest load rating for the ES100 series. Aparently they don't think it is high enough for the 2800lb EP.

The EP is rated to carry 800-900lbs or so. So add that to the weight, you get a potential static load of ~3600 to 3700 lbs. You drive vigorously or stop suddenly or do emergency maneuvers or etc.... that 4x1047= 4188lbs total load rating can be cutting it close.

now im scared. i have those tires on my car. look nice and i havent had any problems. what are the actualy chances of them blowing out?

the factory tires came with a load rating of 88V

typically you do not want to go any lower than the stock tire load rating.

The 195/50/15 avs es100's have a load rating of 82V. that is not acceptable IMO.

If you drive agressively, this is a bad idea. but if you just mosey around town, then you'll be fine.

but why didn't you just go with the 205/55/15 or 195/60/15?

Oh $HIT!!!!! I didn't know that it would be that bad. I thought that since I have 195/50 on now that it wouldn't be a problem. I wanted the 195 b/c of price and b/c I like the way my car seem to pick up faster than stock. Thanks for your input guys. So I sould be alright if I dont race is what your telling me? WHY THE HELL DID HONDA HAVE TO MAKE SUCH A HEAVY ASS CAR???!!!!!!

for your own safety I recommend getting a tire with a higher load rating...the rule of thumb is to never go below the stock rating(here it's 88) although logically speaking 87 should be a-ok since it's not very different and still gives you a margin of safety...

However, 82 is far below 88 and I would not feel safe myself with friends in the car and luggage....if you have to suddenly put a lot of weight on a specific tire for some reason(maybe flying into a pothole or out of it or whatever), bad things can happen...very bad things.

Which is why I'm trying to find a light wheel/tire combo that also has good load ratings...I'm thinking 16" slipstreams plus some good 205 or 215 tires with ninety something load ratings...

And if you ever want to turbo you'll want to up the load rating a lot...or it will not be fun.

Thanks everyone for the info. Now that I have these tires, who can I sell them to? I currently have 195/50/15 with an 82 rating right now on my EP and I have had absolutely no problems but, you guys scare the crap out of me now so I'm putting stock rims back on. Thanks again everyone.

Good post, guys... something I don't think about very much when looking at tires, and when I end up with new rims/tires on my EP, it'll be something I pay more attention to... Thumbs up!

EP stock = 195/60R15
good replacement size = 205/55/R15 (the same diameter)

195/50r15s are perfect for civics up to '95.

Your car is gonna look silly with tires that small. Maybe you should have listened to the guys at Tire Rack.

yeah - 205/55/15 is the best upgrade size for the stock rims. Aggressive but still about the same overall size. I've had both Potenza S0-3's and Yokohama Avid's on my stock wheels and both 205/55/15 and that size is sooooo much better than stock :)

ummmmmm no they dont look that silly, they are 17's.
205/40 17's to be precise. my question was, is the weight ok for our ep cars?

I think CleanBlack is referring to KickerSi's question about his 15's

I like they way they look. I currently have the size on my EP now. They were on my LS rims when I bought them. I dont like the 60 series look its just too big. I think that my rim/tire combo will look better when droped. As you can see it is definately different...

 oh.......sorry.....my mistake.........

lol

WOW:confused: I was wondering what our car would look like with LS wheels, I was thinking about this look before I got my '02 OE Honda Accessory wheels from Honda parts. I don't know If I like them on our car or not now. Mabey if it's lowered or has a taller sidewall tire to it? I don't know just not really feeling it. I would like to see a picture of an Ep with the six-spoke GS-R wheels from '98-'00 I bet that doesn't look too bad or what about a set of '99-'00 Si or '03 EX alloys......anyone got them on their Ep?

www.tirerack.com has a good spec sheet for each tire that they sell. For the 712, here is the link ... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Kumho&model=ECSTA+Supra+712
Tire Rack has put the max load right on that sheet.

Each tire has a load rating associated with it. it is usually right after the size spec:

e.g.
Kumho 712 205/55VR15 88V

The load rating is "88" and the speed rating is "V".

from http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/speed.htm,
we get:
load rating = 1201lbs, or 545 kg
speed rating = 149 MPH, or 240 km/h.

I'm not calling anyone here a dumbass so don't construe my comment as an insult... but it seems like an awful dumbass thing to do to mount such small tires on your car for only asthetic purposes.

That's like when bigg, fat, nastee chicks wear real tight shirts with their belly rolls hanging out over their poor belts and sweat stains drip from the pits and collar (mtn dew) cause their breathing's constricted.

In both cases, somethings bound to blow.

No offense to bigg, fat, nastee chicks...

Anyone remember that guy with the 18's that blew a rear tire..then hit a wall or something?.... see what his tires were.. I know i've been having trouble finding tires cause of the load rating or whatever, the EP is just so damn heavy.....

I would seriously suggest getting higher load-rated tires...

And in the meantime don't load up the car with everybody...cuz the car weighs 2750ish and if there's 5 people in the car that weigh 200lbs(well ok, maybe a little higher than your friends' weights, but maybe you have really heavy friends that skew the average) that's up to 3750...which is right around the very limit of your tires....so it's definitely not a good idea since any sort of extra impact could blow the tires.

I was just wondering what other people thought about this. My father drives a 1998 CL and on the door label it says that the stock tires were V rated. He bought H rated tires from tirerack, but one shop wouldn't install them since they were not at least V rated. Then he called up tirerack and they said that H rated tires are fine for the 3.0 CL. He has them on the car now (went to a second shop without any problems). Will there be any differences between the H and V rated tires(hes not a speed demon, the car won't be hitting even 100 ever) and should have he returned them to buy higher rated tires?

Also, Whats your opinion on if the load rating is just 2 spots lower than stock (ex 86 instead of 88)? I'm thinking about purchasing summer tires that are, but only if I wont have problems.

well,i went ahead and bought new tires...the right ones for the ep this time. if i remember correctly, i got the 215/40 z17's
but i will check when they get here.
now everything makes sense, when i went on a 4 hour trip to new jersey, when we stopped at a rest stop and the hotel my husband commented that he smelled either burning rubber or "something burning". i told him my brakes were fine and thats all i could think of. well, the tire guy i spoke to said that when you have tires that dont support your car correctly or have the wrong weight cap. they will get hot under the pressure of driving and the weight of the car......well, that must have been the smell.
thanks for all the useful info guys, you saved me and my ep from a potential crash. I LOVE YOU GUYS! :'( :'( :p
