What is the purpose of this item???

Found them in the rear panel. I sealed up the hole sound deadener and wondering the purpose of the foam in that location.

ssvr6 is right....they are a parakeet's worth of dead weight. The foam weighs less than other sound deadening materials though, like that fuzzy carpet padding stuff you'll find in some american cars or dyna-mat that you can buy and install yourself.
