Just wondering who else pays for their car themselves? After rent, bills and food not much money left for mods. I'd love to be able to get everything at once but, I = don't want huge credit card debt.

i feal you man i make a little more then 7.50 an hour but with all my bills i feal like i make 5 bucks an hour. my payments are only 240 but i pay 300 everymonth so i dont have to pay as much interist. I owe less then 10,000 now and that kinda feals good. as soon as i start getting my bigger checks im going to dump it all into car payments and get this bitch paid off. Then im going to buy a element and gut my si and make it a road race car and a canyon car so i wont have to drive it around town as much. I will roll im my element. atleast this is what i hope to do but it probly wont happen i will be lucky if i still have my liscense the rate im going. im juggling four tickets right now. i should drive slower though i have brought this upon myself i used to say i hate cops but 2 cops let me go about a month ago right after another so after that i try not to say i hate them since those 2 guys really helped me out by letting me go but then again there is certain cops that i dont like because even though most the tickets i deserved some of them have just been plain old BS.

instead of paying cash, youre better off taking a three to five year plan at 1.9%, and putting the rest into a long term investment plan. Even with the economy in the ruts, you'll still average anywhere from 5-10% yield, which is better than the 1.9% interest.

Paying for the EP, cell, mortgage (used to be rent, but I just closed on my condo a few eeks ago -- yay for building equity!), soon-to-be-DSL, insurance, etc etc. All this on an E-4's pay.

However, my monthly payments would be significantly higher if it were not for the legacy left by my grandfather, who retired as a colonel in the USAF. He was able to take care of everybody in the family even when he was gone.

I guess I would be in the category who pays his own bills.
EP $270
Insurance $150 for 2 cars (I have an 88 prelude with 4Wheel steering, that I can not seem to part with)
Rent: $1100
Utilities: $250 (phone, cable (including internet), electric, gas)
Student loans: $250 (3 more months left!!!!! yeapeeeeee)
The rest is mine, but i am saving up for a big downpayment on a condo.
So, dough for mods. except for little here and there. Just installed a new MP3 radio.

Single guy, making EP, mortgage, utilities, etc, payments.

EP payments...$480/month! (my trade-in, a POS Grand Prix, was worth what I owed on it:mad: )

House payments... $190/bi-weekly. Plunked down a 35% downpayment on the house (Now its ALL EQUITY BABY!)

In five years the EP will be paid off, my RRSPs will be bulking up nicely, and the house will be half paid for. A few more years of saving up, and I'll be S2000 shopping!:D

Glad to see im not the only broke ass on this site!

Okay here's my break down.......25 still at home (UGH)

Car / $479
Insurance / $160 (not bad for three tix and one accident)
Credit Cards / $500
Student Loans / $100
Rent for the 'Rents / $300
Utilities (Cell Phone/Cable Modem) / $100

= $1639 per month and I take home after taxes $2400 ($15.00 an hour plus mielage and travel) Per month.

It really sucks ass when you only have $300 ish a month for food, gas, kickin it , etc and paying the BARE minimum on credit cards. But I got myself into this mess and I'll find a way out eventually LOL! Sometimes I just wanna jump into my EP and drive to the middle of nowhere. But I feel for all you guys, I'm right there with you.

Of course... Here in Canada we get the lovely GST (Goods and Services Tax). 7% on just about EVERYTHING. Also, we get provincial tax (usually about 8%) on the same things!

All in all, we see about 35% taken from our paycheck and then get to pay about another 15% when we spend it!

Add to that the low value of the Canadian dollar, which is thankfully starting to rise again(yay!!:D ) and some stuff for us is hella expensive!

You are lucky, FL doesn't have state income tax. If you think 20-25% is bad, I pay about 35% in taxes and my bonuses are taxed at 48%. That is half!!! that goes to the government. what do i get back from the goverment? nothing, people on welfare pay about $100/month in rent and that includes their utilities. welfare gives them frigging medical with no deductible nor copay, and i have to pay portion of my medical and have to pay $30 to fill a brand name prescription. This is where my taxes are going, to crack head mothers that can't keep their legs together and their crack head boyfriends, that keep banging anything that has 2 legs and a skirt.
It goes to pay a senator salary ($150 000 -250 000/year) who have their own pension plan and i am going to be stuck with social security when I retire that will pay about $1000/month when I am 73. and these senators don't even bother go to work everyday, check your local senator's attendance and they only work 150 days a year.
That is where my money goes!!!!!

I put down $6k a year ago - all my own cash. I had financed the rest at about 8% (dealer f'd me on the loan, cuz I know I had way above average credit after promptly paying off my only student loan - does the dealer get a kickback for higher APR?) I've been paying 380/month for 48 months, but I just refinanced to 5% and now I'll be paying only 340/month. 36 more months and she'll be mine.

Although I paid for part of the Si it's not all by myself heh...no way in hell I'd have come up with 20K without a job...

I got to college and the college bills are much higher than the car though...but the Si's almost paid off =P But for now I don't have money to go into the car because I'm trying to come up with $3800 to pay for summer courses here!

That's assuming I get free housing from a job =P Otherwise I'll move back home and drive to take classes elsewhere...*sigh*

Yah i pay for my car by myself. I am a full time student with a full time job and I get student loans for school and my job pays for my car bill, insurance on two vehicles and my cellphone and all other expenses. I got my EP in October with $250 down and financed thru Honda with 3.9% for 60 Months and my payment is $245/mo.

So far I have been able to get a few mods with extra money.

A lot of banks/credit unions offer car loans - my insurance company even sent me a letter about re-financing options at one point. A good place to start may be with simple phone call to some local banks. I was lucky, because the bank that the Honda dealership got me a loan from was where I refinanced too - thus no fee to transfer the title. If you can find a way to contact honda finance, give that a try. Anyway, once you find a bank to re-finance, its pretty easy - the hardest part is signing a bunch of papers at the bank.

Its true, I got my loan down to 5% interest, just by shopping around, and the home loan has gone down, too from 8.25% in 2000 to a current 6.325%, all from shopping around... For the home, all it took was me calling "just to let you know this one company offered me a better deal..." then they offered me a no-hassle deal...

Im 31 and doing quite well financially (if I may say so), but I always expect it to go away, so I'm a cheap bastard anyway. I think holding off on having kids has helped alot, and having a money-saavy wife helps too. ;)

You've all probably heard me preach before, but look around and you'll see that lots of men in America live well beyond thier means for the sake of status symbols that actually mean nothing.

I have always paid for my cars myself, sometimes with cash, sometimes on a loan. I bought the SiR with $4000 down, traded my 1998 Mazda Protege in for $6500, and financed the rest at 2.9% for 36 months.

I like reading Sport Compact Car and other similar magazines, and I always wonder where these people get the money to modify a car as far as some do. I have seen Civics with $30,000 and up in modifications... I like my EP, but if I wanted to spend $60ish thou on a car, I would buy one that kicked off the lot.

Lets see: the RX-8 (the new RX-7/Miata that are coming), the regular Miata, Nissan's 350Z, Subaru's Impreza STi, the EVO 8, the Audi TT Quattro, Lexus IS300, BMW 330iS... hmmmm... Mustang SVT or Rousch.
