Im mergin onto the freeway yesterday, shift into third, ride it up to the fuel cutoff, shift into fourth, (positive it went into fourth gear notch) and instead of it going into 4th, it went into second! It happened to me twice yesterday while merging... So, fuel cutoff in Third= 80 sumthin... right? Anyways, fuel cutoff in second= 55... To make a long story short, my engine ROARED up to atleast 9600 RPM before i got the clutch back in... Im pissed... honda will be gettin a call from me this week... Whatu think, tranny out of allignment? Engine damage? Im pissed, but i do know that it sounded BITCHIN!  This happened to anyone else?

FUNNY last time i checked fuel cut of was at 7200..

how did you go 9600 RPM? lol

i smell BS

No BS it can be done easily. Ive never done it but think aboot it. If you're cruising at 3000 rpm in third, thats about 4500 rpm in second, maybe higher. once you downshift, you'll go from 3000 (3rd) to 4500 (4th). If you redline it in third (7100 rpm) but "upshift" ( ie- think you goto fourth but goto second) you can EASILY rev up to 9000 rpm. Yes the fuel is cut off then, so your rpms drop as soon as your car's speed goes to a speed within the range of the gear's speed. So there. No BS. And Brett, hope your EP is okay, hate to see another one go down:( :( :( .

I have done this bad two about twice so far if I remeber right. Both times I was not even near red line so I only went up to around 6-7000 RPM's. This if the reason I am not going to put a short sifter in there for a little. I want to make sure I have this car down before I get a upgrade like that for my car.

No BS here, I wish it was... Fuel cut off actually hits when the tach hits about 7100, but if your wheels are spinnin real fast, and you put your clutch into a low gear, that wont stop the engine RPM's from skyrocketing, even though the fuel may be cutoff... There is nothing that will disengage the clutch from the engine if rpm's get to high...

Thanks man, should be fine, if not, its all under warranty... Im pissed as hell! I wouldnt mind a new engine, complements of honda though... Seemed to be running fine today, but we'll see... You think they will be able to blame me if the problem was that the car went into second instead of 4th? Im positive it was in the 4th gear notch.... it just decided to grab second.... Ive been shiftin real carefully into 4th now... I really dont wanna toast my engine... After it happened, the engine temp didnt go up or anything, just had that rotten smell followin me for a while... Oh yeah, when do people reccoment the first oil change? Ive got 1986 miles and havent done a thing, but i hear about people changin at 600 miles etc...

change the oil at 5k miles. oh yeah, check your oil level frequently. the ep has a tendency to use it up quick in first 5k

Did you get a cel? Hear a pop? Does your engine sound irregular? Is it possible that you can shift into the 4 gate/position and select the 2nd gear?

happened to me once, not the accidental upshift but when I was racing a while back i was floored in third around 6k rpm and the shifter popped out of place all of a sudden, both my hands were on the steering wheel. When it popped out of gear i heard a quick pop and all of a sudden i see the tach somewhere around 9k :D

umm so what are u going to tell honda

give me a new motor? cause i didnt shift from 4th instead of 2nd?

cause if u tell them that your tranny fuckty cause u dropped the wrong gear than u are in the wrong

its a catch 22

just stop trying to milk honda for a new motor

yours is fine

Yeah, im not tryin for a new motor, neva said that, i just want my tranny fixed cuz right now theres somethin wrong with it... its notchy on lotsa shifts, and now this problem...

There's nothing wrong with your tranny; this happens when you're not careful. There's a big "thing" about it at www.rsx.com, but for the 6 speed. Do a search for "miss shift" or "misshift", or what ever there. You'll have more information than you could read in an entire day.

The problem is you're shifting to second. Not to be a smarty-pants, but you don't even have 2000 miles on the car; you're still learning the intricacies, feel, etc, at 2000 miles. It' really not that many miles or that long to be driving it to say you know it so well, that you're 100% sure you went to 4th gear. Obviously you didn't. You've gotta be more careful or change your shift technique, way you hold the handle, etc. I put the middle part of my hand on the crest of the sift knob and press straight down when I go from 3rd to 4th. I don't cradle the sift knob, so there's a lot less chance of it going to 2nd that way.

If you want to error, error on the side of putting it into Reverse, because when you're going 80 miles per hour it would basically be impossible unless you double clutched--and most people don't do that, especially at 80.

By the way, I have a video of a guy miss-shifting and blowing the engine in his RSX type-S. Not sure where it is though; on a CD I burned somewhere.

I think a lot of other people have the same video. Maybe someone could post it.

You guys know that you can disengage the gear without using the clutch. If you are in 3rd or 4th (using these as examples but can be done w/ any gear) maintain a constant speed, then very gently press the gas pedal and let off at the same time you gently nudge the tranny into neutral. If you have your hand resting on the shifter it is very likely if you are in a very high rpm range for it to become disengaged especially if the limiter kicks in. After the tranny is in neutral though the limiter should kick in and there should be no way to bypass it.

No worries though i'm sure our engine can take it. Good thing we have a timing chain instead of a belt. Remeber what you see on the tach is probably 500-1000 rpm off at that high.

When and if you go to honda don't admit anything. Also, reset your ecu.

i think you may want to get your valves and valve seats checked you may have floated a valve or done minor damage. even if the damage is minor it can still cause major problems later.
And secondly i have gone from 2-1 thinking i was going 2-3 and i am pretty sure it was just me... lol...
so i guess what i am saying is... try to shift a lil slower and make sure of what gear your going to... if the problems presist go get it checked and while your there pick me up a brochure on the new element and s2000... lol jk...
And thirdly... like i said i am guilty so i am not hating or questioning your driving abilities however if youre shifting at fuel cutoff like you say.. well that makes me think your running it hard... and theres nothing wrong with that but with hard driving comes hard shifting and you might just be getting a lil over anxious and hitting the wrong gear... it happens to the best of us... but like i said this is all IMO so just keeping working with it something is bound to turn up if its you its easily fixable if its your car take it to honda...
AND DONT FORGET... while youre there to get me a S2000 brochure... lol really i am just kidding... lol

Yeah, i dont normally drive like that, i was just havin some fun with some friends... I was thinkin the same thing about gettin the valves checked and all, it wouldnt hurt... How much would a check up like that cost? Im 16 and broke... :( speaking of S2000, have you seen ArticBlueRSX's S2000? Check it out in MR section, WOW! Its my desktop right now... Anyways, thanks for the input all...

How to Reset the ECM
-Turn the ignition switch OFF, and remove the No. 6 ECU (15A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds.

I'm not sure if you will need to let the car re-learn idle. I'm assuming this just resets the freeze data that includes:

-Diagnostic Trouble Code
-Engine Speed
-Vehicle Speed
-MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure)
-ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature)
-Fuel System Status
-Short Term Fuel Trim
-Long Term Fuel Trim
-Intake Air Temperature
-Throttle Position
-Calculated Load Value

Freeze data would be that data that is stored when an abnormal event happens. (ie a DTC being thrown)

EP was my first car too! Got in January and have been loving it since. AND i just got an AEM CAI, DC Sports headers, and Eibach springs in the mail yesterday. JOY!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D (gratutious monkey use-i know) I had a hard time convincing my parents, but after explaining to them that i bought this car to modify it, they let me buy whatever i can afford (wheels are next, after strut bars, and sway bars, and whatever else...) But i got a question for all those who installed the CAI themselves- is it really neccessary to jack up the car? I don't have a jack stand or anything and it's to heavy to have someone hold the car up for me (he said jokingly:D ) Otherwise, i can install the CAI myself.

Haha! That is SO my parents! "You have wheels that work just fine!" I love your coilover story... how easy are coilovers to adjust? Ive always wondered about that... My dad would be fine with this stuff if it werent for my mom... hees always gotta side with the woman of the house... u know that...
