how do after market cams make HP

I was wondering how is it that aftermarket cams make more HP. can somone try and explain ?

Engines are all about sucking air in and blowing exhaust out. Cams control the valves that open and close and let air in and out. How long they are open, how high they are open and how much they overlap all effect how the engine runs. I forget the specifics but whats good at high revs makes an engine idle poorly. That's where vtec comes in with the switch over to more aggressive cams at higher revs.

Anyway, aftermarket cams are just designed to different specs and change the dynamics of how the engine runs.
