Recall my EP was using about 0.7 qt of oil every 1000 miles for the first 10,700 miles. Note at 5000 and 10000 mile marks, I made changes with group IV synthetics. At 10,700 miles I began an oil consumption test with the dealer service dept. The service manager made me switch out my Redline 5W20 and HAMP filter for Honda 5W20 and Honda filter.

Over the next 1000 miles, used 0.5 qt. Another 1000 miles after that, consumption fell again to 0.25 qt. 300 more miles and the level has not fallen from the top mark on dipstick. Moral of story: don't switch to synthetic oil while engine is still breaking in.

i dont think its the synthetic oil... i had the same problems and did the same consumption test while using honda 5-20 and it went from using 1.35 quarts over 1000 at 5800 miles to only .25 per 1500 at 7500 miles...for some reason some of the 02 si cars used a bunch of oil in the 4500 to 7500 mile range during break in... others have had the same problem and after 10000 and 12500 miles its all done using any oil at all... at least thats what im hoping for..

they say 600 miles but the tech i spoke with said 600 is good to not redline it but after that until about 8200 for the actual motor itself and the internals....during the time before 8200 but after 600 you can drive it like you want but you should just pay close attention to the oil level at every fill up of gas...

me, too. i went from a quart per 1k miles to practically nothing in 9000 miles. i changed oil twice during that time... once at the dealer during an oil consumption check. i don't think it's caused by synth oil, it's just our engines and how they break in. mine just got changed to mobil 1 synth on monday!

I have had one oil filter change at 5000 miles. before that I was going through about a half-quart a month. Since then it has tapered off to nearly no consumption, even with auto-x events.

I have an 02 with the same problem. I knew it was gonna happen cause they told me that the oil they used was a break in oil. No surprise to anyone right? Well, she also said that it was gonna eat up some oil because it helps seal the engine, making sure the engine would last. Im only at 2800 and the oil is already at the bottom of the two holes its supposed to be in between on the dipstick.

ps: i'm no expert but the way i understand it is the lower number means how thick at 0 degress centigrade and the higher number means how thick at 100 degrees centigrade.
