Just wondering, do you get that smell gunning it? I've got 2200 miles on my EP.

I used to get it often at first untill it gradually went away before I passed 20,000 miles in my car.

Yeah I used to get the same smell too. Mostly when I was in reverse. But it has since gone away. Once your car is broken in, it should go away.

That must be it... I need to change my shorts. :)

I've been running premium gas. Never had this happen with past cars. I guess it's the cat doing it's job.

Its not necessarily the octane grade of gas that causes this - its the sulfer content in the fuel. Some brands are worse than others.

hmmm, if that sulfur thing is true then i got BS'ed on my last car, a 99 civic, i took it to the dealer and asked him what the smell ws, and he said it was air pollution, something that is put there to cut down on air pollution... guess i got BS'ed

I dismissed this thread a while ago because I never had any strange smells from my car...

All up until now. And it's definitely directly related to my intake. Put on an Injen intake at about 8500 miles, and the next morning on the way to work gunning it on the freeway produced a (swampy?) smell. Almost like something may have been burning, then coming through my vents. Only during hard acceleration do I notice this, though. After a while (about 1000 miles, it's getting a little better, but still noticeable (or maybe I'm getting used to it?)

I've heard many times before that crude oil contains sulfur and part of the process making gasoline involves removing the sulfur, purely because of its unpleasant smell. One way an oil company can stay competitive is to cut costs by allowing at times more sulfur parts-per-million into its gasoline.

In the US it can range from 30ppm (California) to 300ppm (midwest). It doesn't effect performance or emissions rating, just a matter of stench.

Try changing gas stations (even the same brand, but a different location), and see if it helps.

That still doesnt explain why it coud be called the "behind a new car scent" since it seems to be stronger on new cars, and seems to unnoticeably be gone after the car breaks in. Maybe the catalytic convertor starts to filter better after it gets a little break-in?

I never noticed it that much until my CAI.

I think it has to do with the engine running to lean, getting more air the fuel, that's what smells like to me.

Most new cars have that smell, kinda like an oil fart, it goes away after the engine breaks in. LOL.

the smell is coming from the engine running rich.....Honda engines tend to very rich.....
