if you want to get a good, cheap, valve cover, get a can of VHT-wrinkle red engine paint. spray a light base coat and every ten minutes spray another coat. the wrinkling takes a while, and the more coats you add the more it wrinkles. I did 12 light coats. don't let the previous coat dry before the next one goes on (thats what VHT said). when it is all wrinkled and dry, wrap a paint paddle with 800 to 1000 grit sand paper and make the cast in letters look shiny silver again.
Voila, "jdm" valve cover for $8.

I work off in 6 days, i will post pics then. I also have the spark plug cover and manifold cover painted dupli-color platinum silver (saw that in an old post). $15 and the top of the motor looks totally different.

little confused there... are you selling it for $15? Did it cost 15? what's painted in dupli??

The spark plug cover and the intake manifold cover are painted with the platinum silver. It matches the honda optional manifold cover, only it will not have the red I-VTEC sticker. the platinum silver is about $5 at wal-mart and the VHT is about $8 at most speed shops or Summit. So for about $15-tax and all, this can be done.

Leave the sticker on, it will never stay on if it is removed. use masking tape, line up the straight edges and take an xacto knife and cut the corners in the raised groove around the perimeter of the i-vtec sticker. make sure the edges are stuck. also the piece that is not over the manifold, little side box, it is left black on the optional cover.

damn i did my spark cover and intake mani cover and i have to say DAMN DAMN they look so nice. i have to add that the aluminum and universal red look so great together. i painted the intake mani aluminum and the extension on it uni red(looks like type-r red) and it looks so hot. the spark cover is aluminum so i matches the valve. i am doin the calipers next weekend in bright red so that is gonna look good too. hope some ppl want to see pics cause next week they will be uploaded...(want to finish the calipers then get like 5 pics) oh ya got to wax car too.

I use a scotchbrite pad for all my prep work. lightly scuff the surface to remove the shine and the paint will stick good. thanks for the thumb tip.

That looks good. I've always wonder what a black valve cover would look like. I might try this, with black. :)

Looks hot! I might do this.

Couple other things you could do, the JDM dipstick is black not orange, and the i-vtec is red not black. If you wanted to go all the way.

the silver is "dupli-color platinum 88-01590" and it is in the touch up paint section at wal-mart. the red is "VHT wrinkle plus coating sp 204 red" and I ordered this from a local speed shop, summit also carries it. and the only way to get the red "i-vtec" is to buy the optional cover and that is about $60 vs. $4 for the platinum paint and live with black "i-vtec". personally I don't care $56 worth about the sticker. thats just me, but $56 buys a lot of beer!:D

ok i really want to do this but i'm scared of removing the valve cover. is it hard to remove/put back on? don't you have to get a new gasket? and is there a chance oil could leak ?

oldschoolimport
09-29-2003, 03:58 AM
take off the spark plug cover and then about 6 nuts. the gasket is rubber and should be fine to reuse. take your time. I can pm my cell # if it would help ease your mind.

I need to give this a try...just need to get off my lazy butt to do it. :D

how did you mask it off so that the honda ia still silver?

oldschoolimport
09-30-2003, 04:02 AM
I didn't mask the honda. paint it with everything else and when it is dry sand it off with 800-1000grit sandpaper wrapped around a paint paddle. the paintpaddle will keep the sandpaper flat and it will only take paint off the flat surfaces of the letters.

oldschoolimport
09-30-2003, 03:38 PM
yes. there are 2 sizes that I know of. I use the one that is 1" wide and about 12" long. insert phallic references HERE.:D

do the nuts for the valve cover have to be torqued?

oldschoolimport
10-07-2003, 11:18 AM
I don't torque the valve cover nuts. the valve cover gasket is similar to rubber rope and it will mash down and out when it is tightened. as long as it is a little more than snug, it should be fine. tighten the nuts til you feel it is tight. remember, they are only 10mm nuts, so they can't take much tension. hope this helps.

yep that helps a lot! thanks. I have the intake manifold cover, silver i-vtec cover with the red writing, new in the box that everyone is talking about. Im selling it 50 shipped if anyone is interested.
