View Full Version : Tires don't grip as much as I thought.

I was driving through a wooded area and suddenly the brilliant idea strikes me to do some hard cornering. So I go around a couple of corners at decent speeds when one curves much more than I expected. The tires lost grip and suddenly about half to seventy-five percent of my car is off the road. It sounded like my rear bumper was getting ripped off. I managed to follow the turn an return to the road. I pulled off to view the damage a couple hundred yards off the road. It was bad. My tires had mud on them. Not a scratch other than that. All in all I think the car and myself (didn't slam on brakes didn't hit the clutch just lightly braked without oversteering until I was back on the road) handled it well (not to mention the girl I was with who didn't freak out at all) but I had a bit of luck too. I thought I was going to have some major body damage. I was already calculating the cost to replace my rear quarter panels / bumper before I even stopped.

The stock tires are pretty crap. I'm still using them at the moment, but you can't even almost take the car to its limits with them. I'm going to wear them down after a couple more autocross sessions then upgrade to some higer performance street tires. Must save money first :(

Glad your car made it through!

I hear you on the saving money part. The list of stuff I'm "gonna" do seems to be incredibly long. Whoever said patience is a virtue never had to wait to modifiy their car.

The UK CTR runs on Bridgestone Potenzas (205/45/17). This is a fairly soft compound tyre and gives pretty good grip.

I can't imagine why US Honda supply the Civic SI with nasty Michelins!!

Theres nothing wrong w/ Michellins....however it was kinda dumb to equip our cars w/ "all-season" tires although our cars are "sport compacts"....not 4 door family sedans.

The factory tires are GARBAGE. If they weren't attatched to my wheels, I'd throw them out.

The stock tires are pretty sh*tty. Now that I have my car lowered I take a small turn at a low speed and my tires squeel like I'm doing 50 around a 90 degree turn. Definately upgrading to some wider tires. 205/55/15's sound good. :D

the cool thing is we can go as wide as 215 tires. not just 205.

Yes the tires are crappy but I think the key is the road curved more than you expected if you were prepared and knew the road you could have entered the corner properly and powered through the turn. Not flaming or anything, I just pushed the car Saturday morning in the Smokies and it handled excellent. Not as good as it would with sticky rubber but up to 90 mph it was fine. By the way how fast were you going???

You don't think 215 is too wide for our cars?
