As you can tell, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to modding cars. I read the threads in the suspension forum, but I find that I lack a basic understanding of the different parts that are available, and what they are used for.

I know that springs, shocks, struts and coilovers are all used to improve the handling and lower the car. What I'd like to learn is how each is different. Do some of them work together, while others replace each other?

thanks in advance. :)

Dammit - first reply didn't go through.
Anyway, reread this thread (http://ephatch.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17644), or read it for the
first time, if you haven't already.

Explains the difference between a MacPherson style suspension
(used on our Si and includes struts, shocks and springs) and a
double wishbone suspension (uses control arms and shocks/springs).
Also, coilovers = shocks/struts. Except most are adjustable, both
height and firmness (I can't think of the right term for that, but
I mean a hard/firm ride for racing versus a soft Lexus style ride
for cruising).
