Do the shift gates "change"?

Yesterday, I noticed I had to move the shifter over to the left a lot farther to shift from fifth to fourth. This shift used to require only a slight move to the left, but now I have to move the shifter halfway over and then down.

Do the shift gates "change" over time? Why would there be a difference in the shifting movement now? Is this the way it is for you?

you actually push to the left? from 5th, i just push it down :) and it goes to 4th since it can't go to R.

That's what I mean, I used to just push it down and it would go to fourth, but now I have to go way left. One day, it might accidentally go into 2nd; I'm worried.

hmm...werid...when i go from 5th i just tap it out of gear...and than pull straight down. its not a quick shifting action but this way i have no fear of going into other gears.
