View Full Version : Why does Tein suggest 1.4-1.6" from the perch on their Basic kit?

With that much space from the perch to the bottom of the thread, it provides roughly a 2" drop. Are there any negatives to going higher? I've raised my coilovers in the back since I put on my stockies and I'm probably going to raise all four corners some more soon...

Also, has anyone had excessive creaking from their Tein basics. It's driving me nuts!

Strange that you want to go up. I want to go down. There's too much gap with the recommended settings, IMHO. How much gap do you have? I've got aboutu 2 fingers between the tires and the bottom of the wheel opening.

I've been assuming the Basic and SS are the same (except for the shocks, obviously), but maybe that's not right.

By the way, no noises at all from mine, front and back.

Maybe I was reading incorrectly, but I believe the manual shows the 1.4-1.6" gap between the bottom locking perch and the bottom of the thread. At that setting I had less than a finger gap. It provided around the same gap in the front as my Neuspeed Race springs.

Well, check out these pictures and see if this makes sense to you. The first is of my car, just so you can get an idea of how much drop I have. The second and third pictures show the front and rear coilovers, and how much thread is left at the bottom. It's not much, but I still have almost 2 fingers space.

Something to think about: I have slightly shorter tires than stock. Also, camber will affect how much tire gap you have. My camber is -1 degree in the front and the rear is about -0.6.

Here's my car:

Wow, that's weird! My coilover has 13 grooves between the bottom and the perch in the back and it still looks lower than that. I'll have to take some pics...

Thirteen? That's three or four times as much as I have. Please, post some pics.

Yeah, I want to see pics as well. My Tein Basics make crunching noises in the rear at times, but that has mostly gone away. I have the height set to 1.6 inches and going to 2.0 inches soon...it rides to low now IMO. However, that may all change once I get my new 15s (205/50/15)...currently riding on 17s (215/45/17). We shall see...I'll post some pics of it sooner or later.

I wanna see what you guys are calling "too low". Beg, borrow, or steal a digital camera and get them pics up. :D

It's hard to tell how much space you've got. Maybe if you post from the center of the wheel to the top of the wheel opening and I'll do the same.

I bet your car is a little bouncy in the back (?). With that much space on the threads, your springs are already pre-loaded up pretty good. If you feel like experimenting some day, let it down a little and see how it rides. I noticed my car was much less bouncy when I dropped it just 1/2 an inch.

I found the ride to be much improved when I raised the back...

mine are still creaking in the rear... I had it adjusted about the same height as yours... what are you at now? It looks like I am looking at my car in those pics...

Yeah, my rears are making noises as well...someone said to trim the dust cover boot about an inch or so. I plan to do this soon and raise my ride up a little, but it was higher in the rear and made crunching noises then as well.

won't you shorten the life of the coilover by setting them too low... i used to have non-adjustable coilovers on my old car and they blew out hella quick...

Tein actually suggests that you set them pretty low. That's why I posed my original question. What are the negative aspects of going higher than Tein recommends?

I'm already higher in the back than they recommend and I want to raise all four corners some more. I don't like the low clearance in the front and I hate the look of a car slammed on stock wheels. Maybe if I had gotten 205/55/15's it wouldn't look so tucked...

A little off topic, but where did each of you order your Basics?

And they are designed for our car right? I know the S-tech's aren't.

They're listed under EP3 on the Tein website. They fit the regular civics as well.

Yes, the Type BASIC Damper kit < http://tein.com/badamp.html > & Type FLEX damper kit < http://tein.com/flexdamp.html > will fit our EPs.

Bump.

PS- The squeaking stopped months ago. I guess they just needed some break in time.
