I have almost 2800 miles on my Si and every time I get out of it I can smell the cat. Was this something that you all had a problem with or am I just smelling my ass?:D My wife has smelled the exhaust too. I would really apreciate all of your feedback.

did you put an aftermarket on? it usually smells a little for a bit. if it's stock.. hmm maybe u're burning oil or something. u can have it checked out at the dealer.

Its a stock muffler and I am not driving it hard before the car is turned off. I am not burning oil, I know what that smells like. I blew a head gasket in my 1989 Si and that was pretty bad. If there is anything else anyone can tell me. Is this normal or what? I dont want to have to take a trip to the dealer unless I have to, there a bunch of cock suckers.

Several people here mentioned the same smell. Including myself. It goes away over time. No worries.

mine smelled like that for the first 3000-4000 miles, and then i got my oil changed, and it seemed to fade away, which is a bit strange, but i have almost 6000 now and i never smell it anymore.

Same problem here but not all the time. It is really noticeable in my garage sometimes. I think it's starting to go away though. I wouldn't worry about it right now, wait for a while and see what happens.

It's that shit smell... someone said that it was sulfer content in the gas or something like that. I get it too when I get on the gas. It'll go away as the cats get broken in.

I really hate to raise this question for fear that it will start another war, but I'm curious so here it goes. For all you that are experiencing this smell, what grade gas are you running? (shielding head)

I'm just asking because I posted a link to a website during the huge octane debate of '02, and one of the things it mentioned was a rotten egg smell from the exhaust.

here's the link:

(please be gentle)

I used to experience that smell no matter what gas I used till about 15,000-18,000 miles. Not all the time, but ususally after hard driving or when backing up. I had it checked out by the dealer, but they couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. A friend told me that it could last till about 20,000 miles and sure at about 15,000 it slowly went away untill it pretty much never happens anymore. I now have 23,000 miles on my base RSX (same engine as your si).

Not to bring up an old thread, but I had the smelly exhaust problem for the first time last night and I did a search on site.

That link posted above talks about how if you put in higher octane gasoline you could get a rotten egg smell. Well guess what? Seems like there's some truth to that. I have always put in 87 gas into my Si so far. Last night, the 87 pump wasn't working so I put in 89. When I got home the exhaust stunk up the entire carport!! If it isn't the octane, that's the biggest coincidence I've ever seen.

My exaust smells terrible, like something died. I have just over 9000 miles and it didn't always smell.

I have been getting higher octane gas lately. That might be it. I'll switch back to 87 and see if the smell goes away.
