View Full Version : Carbon Fiber Rear Hatch Cover....

I am going to be manufacturing these Carbon Fiber rear hatch covers and am trying to get an idea of how many members would be interested. Pricing has yet to be determined as I still need to wait for final production costs but my estimation would be around the $230 range. This is because of the amount of fiber involved to manufacture this piece.

I have a prototype piece to give you guys an idea of how they will look. This is preproduction so the edges are not finished and there is no clearcoat over the carbon. Each finished piece would look like a finished carbon fiber hood. These should be available by next weekend.

Yes it is still VERY visible through the glass.

Carbon fiber will not shatter. It will flex and it is very strong.

I could do a DIY Video for it. :D

I think if you have speakers on your rear deck carbon fiber is easy to cut with a dremal or ZIP tool. So you can remount them on the carbon fiber deck.

So you say it is real carbon which you can tell from the pictures but is there going to be a fiberglass underside? If not how many layers of carbon are you going to use because I work with carbon fiber for a living and anything less then 3 layers with out fiberglass or some kind of honeycomb support will not hold up! Are you going to mold these are they going to be over stock lids? Not tring to down grade the product just asking questions.

Mugen_EP
11-30-2003, 10:32 PM
While the first piece (shown in the pictures) was hand made the rest will come from a mold, that is part of the hold up. The actual number of layers has not been determined so that is also part of the reason that the price is not set. The first piece in my car is only one layer of unfinished carbon fiber and it holds fine. I have worked with carbon fiber in the past and have manufactured pieces (mainly for motorcycles) so I have experience working with it. I appreicate your input and when I have more concrete information I will pass it along.

There is no point...and if you think about it, everyday people ask..."what's the point in modding a car" when they aren't into what we are into. There is never really a point...just an effectuation...a feeling of need...as if we need to fill some void in our life. The real point, is that we shouldn't mod a car at all, we should drive it for it

sick, when will these things be ready to go and would you be able to cut mounting holes in it for rear speakers?

Mugen_EP
01-08-2004, 08:19 AM
They are ready to go now. I really wouldnt cut into the fibers to mount speakers but if your interested I could easily have one made out of pure fiberglass so you could cut out whatever you wanted and then have it painted. Of course this option would be A LOT cheaper.

I have done some minor cutting with CF before so I kinda have a grip on what to do and what not to do, but I have components mounted in mine now and would need them to transfer over. On the indented oval area, could you give me the apprx thickness?

The thickness of the fiber or how deep the indentation is?
