View Full Version : Installed my comptech silencer for those days I need it

So I went ahead and got this silencer for those days that I go on a long trip, or one with the wife along....and soon the baby...don't want that deep tone messing with my kid ;)

The comptech is nice, but at about 75mph it has this deep deep deep tone that gets kind of irritating. Daily driving around, it won't get that bad. I will only use it on days that I have long trips...the outlet diameter is only 1.5"

So I got the insert and installed it...sound is waaaaaayyyyyy down from what it was. I was really surprised it worked so well.
There is no more deep tone at highway speeds. It isn't raspy with the silencer in, I thought might be, but luckily no.

First hole I had to drill:

That first one, just wasn't right :yellm:
http://a0.cpimg.com/image/B0/2E/28563120-fd43-02000180-.jpg

And that freaking second one wasn't cutting it either, so here's the third and final one
http://a2.cpimg.com/image/D0/30/28563152-c8de-02000180-.jpg

I wasn't impressed with comptech directions on this. The tab that the screw goes in, wasn't positioned right, so I ended up having to use some plyers and bend it a few times until it sat flush on the top inner part of the exhaust.

02,

So that's an insert into the tip? BTW, when did you re-buy a comptech?

Anyway, I too don't like the droning sound you get at 75mph or so.
New speakers and a headunit have helped some, but still...the only
thing is, I have an RSX-S tip on it, so I don't know if that silencer
would fit. Hrm.

Holy crap I would have been pissed if I had to drill once into a Comptech exhaust, three times would have killed me.

so you have the tip from a stock rsx exhaust? if so, it may not work, what are the diameter of the inside of the tip and outer diameter. the outter diameter of the comptech tip is 3.5" and the inside is about 3", but gets smaller as you go in towards the exhaust.

here's a pic of the silencer

yeah, kinda pissed me off...especially considering the price it cost for the damn exhaust. But luckly I did it on top and the tip hides under the bumper and you can't see it

Oh andy, I rebought it about 2 weeks ago from the person I sold it to before that...Quicksilver.

yeah, well it was either I find a way to quiet it down, or have to get rid of it again, I have a child on the way.

is that how all silencers are installed??? u need to drill into the exhaust?
also is there anyway u can post a sound clip??

haha, you're like an exhaust pawn shop or something. j/k

I'll have to look at my tip and see if that would fit. I got mine
from siep (joe), and he mentioned something about getting me a tip
if I wanted it.

As for the drilling, eh, if it doesn't show, who cares, right? ;) Heck,
I'm currently unable to open my doors from the inside of my car b/c
of my shoddy speaker install. lol

no not on all exhaust...exhausts like the hks, skunk2 have silencers already with them and are predrilled.

I'll get comparable sound clips when I get a chance.

yeah, siep's a cool guy...it may fit, only thing is, if it will fit securely in there. When I put mine in, it was somewhat tanglely, so I took a mallet and took to smack it in there real good, now it doesn't move :D

the skunk2 is pre-drilled, but mine didn't come with one when I bought it. Vertigo didn't get one either. I called them a week ago and they mailed me one along with the new skunk2 catalog. there better be cams part #s in there. The silencer should be here any day now.

There's a few other parts I hope he needs to sell soon, so that I can try them on my car for a few months and sell them back to him at a mild discount. :D Yes, it seemed silly to both of us in hindsight, but we're both happy now.

Sorry to see that it took you 3 drillings to get it right, Mike. Could you have drilled it from underneath and installed it that way? I've got an aftermarket exhaust on my second car that has silencers that screw in from underneath.

oh yeah, you can do it from beneath, I just followed comptech's directions, I see why they wanted it that way, less chance of someone seeing that tab.

update to the vids...I'm uploading two vids with the silencer in...I'll get vids with the silencer out...when I get it out! Damn thing won't come out now :yellm:

okay, here we go
Taking off in 3rd, then letting off (to show there's no deep drone sound with the silencer)
http://www.imagestation.com/video/view.html?id=4193611197&dl=1

Going up to 80mph..notice that there is barely any exhaust noise compared to how it is at 60-80mph (comptech owners will understand that, I'll get the other vids up when I get the silencer out)
http://www.imagestation.com/video/view.html?id=4193611183&dl=1

I can't listen to these, b/c I don't have speakers at work, but I will
when I get home. Might have to order this.

Anyway, for a comparison for others, here's my vids:

Vid 1 (~4MB, Right Click, Save As): http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid94/p91242026634a0eb47110a88ce72627d5/fa36f4d0.mpg
Taken inside the cabin with my Canon digital camera (it has a cheap
built in mic). From about 65-100. Excuse the watermark, seatbelt
indicator and CEL.

Vid 2 (~6MB, Right Click, Save As):
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid94/pda1dbda7b9c2405ca05cc26c53d84796/fa36f4d6.mpg
Same setup, this time from about 30-95ish.

it's funny how differnt somethings sound on vids/clips...but yeah, you can tell from your clips the silencer works.

I got it out...it was so easy  I just took my lug wrench (guess that's what you call it, the one that comes with the car) put the part of the wrench you use to get the lugs off in the silencer, angled the bar a little and it came out.

Vids:

Here's me driving normal with the silencer out going to 80mph
http://www.imagestation.com/video/view.html?id=4193600264&dl=1

Here's me getting on it, going to about 90 or 100mph, then slowing down in third gear.

Getting on it just a tad and letting it coast

02Silver,

I still haven't listened to your clips, but I put my silencer in this
weekend, too. When I first step on the throttle, it sounds like
crap (I think). Sort of a rattly, higher pitched "fart pipe" style
sound. Not really loud, but loud enough to sound junky. Yours do
that? I wonder if I just don't have it in tight enough or something.

sorry, not sure how I missed that you replied. Mine doesn't make that sound at all. No high pitch sound at all. Sounds like the silencer isn't in all the way. When you have it installed, can you move it slightly is you push and pull on it? Make sure you can't when it's installed. Take something that you can use to hammer it in, or tap it in more. I actually feel that there was no need for drilling now. I noticed that when I tap the silencer in the exhaust, it doesn't even move at all, even if I don't have that screw in.

No problem on the reply.
I talked with Joe (siep), he had it custom made so he said it wouldn't
fit exact (I have the RSX-S tip on my comptech). It's no big deal,
though, I'm just going to plan to use it on long trips.
Mine seemed to go in fairly snug (it would move a little) without
the screw as well...

OK 02Silver, how the hell did you get that thing out of there? ;)

I tried to push it in some more after my last post, just to make sure
the raspy-ness I was hearing wasn't b/c it was moving around. It
has sounded a tad better, but the other day I went to remove it and...couldn't.
Tried needle nose. Tried the lug nut removal thingy (tire iron?).
Tried WD-40, wiggling it back and forth and yanking. Nothing. It'll
budge back and forth ever so slightly, but I can't get that sucker
to come out. Anyone have any ideas on how to do it? I took some
pics, I'll post them later to see if anyone can point out a
solution.

the one you would use to remove the lugs off the wheels right? I took that, put the end in with the part that fits on the lugs. I took that end, and put it inside the silencer, then just lifted up. I was standing to begin with, bent down with the tire iron, put it just inside the silncer and lifted up, that made it come loose. I had tried pulling outwards, but that never worked, just pull up on the tire iron while it's in there, I guess it jars it loose.

is it because you have the type s tip on there?

i was reading on Comptech's Web site that the silencer is supposed to be universal to all their 3" tips. the way they made it sound is the only cat-back system it doesn't fit is the NSX exhaust.

yeah, true, but andy actually has a type s stock exhaust tip put on the comptech instead of the regular comptech tip

I dunno what the deal is. Joe (siep) said he had the insert custom
made to fit the Type-S Tip, but I don't know if that's the problem.
That sucker is just wedged in there tight - no matter what I try,
it just moves back and forth ever so slightly, but doesn't want to
seem to come out. I dunno, I've given up for the time being.

Hahaha.
I'm hoping someone else will look at it and go "duh, try this" at
the DIY day. If not, I guess I could always remove the tip and
get it out, but I'd rather not do that.
It's not that bad with it in, but it is a tad raspy. I guess the other
option would be going back to the stock axleback.

w00t. I got my sucka-ass silencer out today at the DIY.
Stuck a 19mm wrench in there and wiggled it back and forth, back
and forth...finally it moved enough to grab it with pliers
and then pull it out.

heh, didn't even realize what 02Silver did when i first looked at

I wish I still had my instructions, I'd scan them...it was sooo vague. It said drill from the top of the exhaust...so I wasn't sure and emailed comptech..they replied back to my email saying yes...but I asked if I was to drill on the outside top...maybe they misunderstood me :(

Oh well, you can't even see the holes if you try to look...well, while it's on the car and because of my lip kit.
