I just got a letter from my dearlership recommending a 10,000 mile service. Is this really anything more than a oil change? I just got my oil changed at about 9000 miles, and i was wondering if i needed to do it since i just changed my oil.

They also rotate your tires, which you can also do yourself. There were some other minor things but I don't remember what they were off hand.

i got one in the mail, they wanted $100. so i changed my oil and rotated my tires and saved myself $100.

in all seriousness im sure its just an oil change, tire rotation and looking at your fluids. shouldnt be too difficult to do yourself.

Thanks, i didn't think it was anything serious like a 40,000 service or anything but i wasn't sure.

Just keep in mind the manual says to only use 5w20. Putting 5w30 or higher in there might be a bad thing... Personally, I'm going to make sure I go back to the manual to see what kind of oil exactly, but I know it has to have a special certification otherwise it'll probably mess things up in the long run.

The type of oil is listed on the stock oil cap as well. :)

only 03 cars have the oil listed on the cap i believe. i do all service at the dealer...that way i have all records of what maintaince i've done...keeps car value WAY up even if you have a shit load of miles :D

No, where did you hear that from? I've got an 02 and it says it on the cap.

Without getting too far into a discussion about oil viscosities let me add this...

A lot of what Honda recommends is based on gas mileage.

If you dig deep enough on www.bobistheoilguy.com you will find Honda recommends different viscosities for different countries.
Same motor, different oil. It's quite ammussing actually.

Besides, there are plenty of thin 5w-30 oils that show numbers very similar to a thicker 5w-20 oil.
Just like there are plenty of thick 5w-30 oils that show numbers very similar to a thin 10w-30.
And so forth throughout the entire oil weight spectrum.

They had your car all day? What did they do, change the engine out?

Holy crap. I'm glad my dad has a hydraulic lift in his garage. I do all my own oil changes, and pretty much all my own work, even when the lift isn't available.

I am going to get my oil changed at the dealer but I am going to go to a local oil change place were they will rotate the tires for $10. That way I am only paying $30 for my 10,000 check up.

i was at the dealer for my 20k service the other day...tire rotation, check of fluids and everything else...took 1 hour @ 62 dollars.

I got a 02 and mine says 5w-20 on the cap. Ever since the first oil change all i run is Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic. I've never had any problems with burning or consumption. So i chose not to run 5w-20. Expecialy if the car had high miles. I'd want to run a heaver viscosity oil. Also, there are quite a few threads regarding oil and which oil to use and the effects of each.

I just got a letter from Honda too.. Its time for my 10k check up. Since I do my own oil change, its kinda pointless to have Honda do it.. I use Castrol Syn-Blend... When they rotate the tires, is it front to back or front to back cris-cross?

I think it's front to back cross.

Ok,I guess our stock tires aren't directional. I just wanted to make sure.. :D

If they were, they must be the worst directional tires ever! :D

off topic but...i went on a freeway interchange one of those big circle ones, sign said 25, i went like...40, my rear end lost it, and i almost went into the gaurd rail...tires have no grip at all...can't wait till i get my S-03s on.

Well, I finally finished my DiY 10,000 check up. I did the rotation, which was a breeze. I had a question on the tire pressure so I called the dealership to make sure I had the correct tire pressure. 32psi Front and 30psi back. I always though the front had to have less psi then the back. I guess not.. :D

Aren't the correct pressures on the driver's side door jamb as well?

You are right I was thinking the same thing when I read his post. They are also in the manual.

Yeah, I knew that but for some reason I always though the front had less psi then the rear. :D
