View Full Version : What RPMs do you shift at?

Just curious to how you all shift and what you shift at during normal driving. Like regular stop and go traffic in the city.

Oh yeah, I shift around 2-3k cause I love my baby and want it to last for a long time...and I'm poor so I need the gas mileage lol :D

I shift at 3800-4000rpm for regular stop light driving around town, and take it to 7700rpm at every gear at least once per week;)
Just listen to the motor it'll let you know when its time to shift

Don't shift too low guys. It can actually be worse then reving your motor up. I usually shifter anywhere between about 3800 and 5500 amd rev the piss out of it at least a few times a day. I actually wish I had more revs then 6800

Thats about how I do it. For everyday driving I dont know if I even look at the tach to be honest. If I am getting on it, then I definitely look at the tach. For normal driving its usually between 2500 and 3500 in my Si. In my Contour SVT I shift around 4000. Depends if I am going up a steep grade or just flat land, I just rev it enough so it doesnt bog the engine down when I go to the next gear.

you want to shift so it lands you above 2k rpms...below that is lugging the engine. I shift at 3.5 all the time, accept first gear, I take that to about 3.8-4k

I usually shift at about 3500 rpms nowadays after reading the manual which states:

Recommended Shift Points
Drive in the highest gear that lets the engine run and accelerate smoothly. This will give you the best fuel economy and effective emissions control. The followng shift points are recommended:

Shift up
1st to 2nd - 17mph
2nd to 3rd - 28mph
3rd to 4th - 45mph
4th to 5th - 56mph

I'm not sure exactly what rpms these shifts are made at, but i'm pretty sure its around 3500rpms.

i shift at 4500, 5000 at times, when im just cruisin... not because i want to stay ahead but because i love to rev... thats what hondas are made for... but i do tend to bounce the redline a lot for the hell of it when i feel like havin fun. i kno its really bad, but that'll jus be my excuse for a2 conversion

Honda wouldn't put such a low redline unless they wanted us to use it.

Sleeper Style
01-19-2004, 05:50 AM
actually i don't think a 2nd gear start is really that bad for the car unless you are giving it to much gas. the ep has a close gear ratio and you are in an out of 1st in a second or two....as long as it rolls to engage 2nd then the tach should bounce to 2k in a very short period of time. atleast mine does w/o shakes and jerks. but i wouldn't even think of trying this on any sort of an incline.

Sleeper Style
01-19-2004, 05:52 AM
oh yeah....and as for the poll.....what's an RPM and a tach? lol....after you have been driving for awhile you really don't pay attention to these things unless you are racing it for a reason. you learn your car and you can hear and feel when it is ready to shift. the car is like a girl...she will let you know when she is ready ;)

I shift around 4500rpm's all day, and occassionally 5k. Anything lower than that and Hyundai's will blow my doors off from a stop. I already lag behind in most traffic when shifting at those rpm's. I just don't think our cars are all that fast.

W/ my new low end, I can shift at 3-3.5k and have the powerband not struggle as if I were shifting at 4-4.5K stock. At the track, I wind first and second out till about 7.5K, but I let third go till about 8k or whenever the 1/4 is over.

Hey... I agree that ep3me2's comment was harsh and uncalled for! No need for insults. I can read and write very well thank you! I'm entitled to my opinion. Under normal driving conditions would we not all be driving within about the same RPM range, and, if so, what is the point of having a poll about it? I meant no offence bro.

Everybody knows if you do NOT shift at redline you are not doing it right. Just because the peak power is lower, doesn't mean you shouldn't go past that point. It doesn't just fall off the dyno. It slowly goes down. Plus it lines you up in the higher rpms for the next gear.

SilentGiant

I try not to start in 2nd...

but it tends to snow and snow turns to ice...when its icy 2nd gear starts are your friend...less torque smooth away from the lights.

and I usually shift at 3500 - 4000 for daily drive..and some times wick it up to 5500-6000 once a week or so...

but I get my rev kicks on a motocyclette....14,000 red line...

I usually shift about 3500 just driving around. It's my short experience with my new EP3 that I don't have to be rolling very fast at all for 2nd gear to be just fine starting out from a slow roll. In fact, when I first started driving it I kept down shifting into first when it wasn't needed sometimes cause i wasn't used to the torque.

right around 3k rpms. if I need some extra giddy-up I'll take it between 4k-5k and shift. I haven't taken it near redline, yet.

Sometimes casual...other times take it higher. It depends on the situation.

i like to push my baby hard and see how hard she pushes back!!:D :D that way i always know the potential my car has and the potential it has to be better...that was until gas prices was like $2.39 for a gallon...:'(

This makes me want to cry. :mcry:

I did a mpg test, shifting below 2200 for a tank with no AC on, sweating my ass off, because it switches to 16 valve at 2200. I actually got worse mpg that way than running with AC on, shifting at comfortable points, like 4k rpm-4500 rpm. My best mpg was 31 running no AC and running the piss out of it driving like a ricer. makes no sense at all, but that's the conclusion. Apparently our cars enjoy being flogged. Little hatchback masochists!

I vary it up from time to time, but I will try to stay within the 3500-4000 range on most driving.

I cannot help but get close to the redline either.

I just love the car.
