Excellent first post!! Welcome.

The oil consumption is an issue, and it is somewhat related to the mileage at the first oil change. I have not had any oil consumption problems in my '02, and I waited until 4500 miles for the first change. I did need to add about 1 full quart during break-in.

The service advisor at honda said that consumption is normal. The "special oil" they use is designed to fill in any holes in the engine. She told me not to take it out till 10,000 miles were on the car. I couldnt wait tho and changed it at 8500.

Could you please slap that lady next time you see her..
for me..thank you...

Never wait 8,500 miles to change your oil...

Oil consumption is normal...
I heard from a teacher or technician mag. that its normal for an engine to comsume about 1qt. of oil between an oil change, thats if your changing it about every 3000 miles..

But it all depends on how you drive your car.

Yeah, slap her. She is both uninformed and uneducated about the cars she deals with. The 10,000 mile oil change interval is for light duty service only, and I seriously doubt any of us drive like that. She should have told you to change it at 5000 miles.

Just curious... what oil (brand and viscosity) are you running now?

A quart every 3k is not bad compared to my girlfriends '98 Eclipse. It consumed a quart every 8-900 miles. 2 dealers she went to said it met the factory specs. Now she has an Integra.

Next time you go to a dealership and have a question...

Ask a Technician...

Most non-technician at a dealership know jack about cars....

The oil comsump. on my car seems to be slowing now.
I have 46000km, and am down to burning just over 1L in the last 6000km. I drive my car hard, and use Motul 300V 5w40.

My car used up about a quart of oil on break in, then I changed my oil at 4500 mi. Since then my engine hasn't used a ml of oil.

Im using Mobil 1 synthetic 0w20. Burned about a quart during breakin, now its not burning much at all after the first change.

How many miles does your car have, and how much is it eating? If you're engine is still breaking in, you may see that decrease.

You should be OK to top off with 10w-30, but I wouldn't run a full change of that weight in the winter that far north. In the warmer months, 10w-30 would be preferable to 5w-30.

Ever thought about going synthetic? It probably won't help your consumption, but cold weather starts will go more smoothly. You can also extend your drain intervals a lot.

You CAN, but it is usually not recommended.

Well... if you're using dino on 10k intervals, then you probably shouldn't extend drains. I would say a good dino (Pennz, Castrol, Chevron) should hold up for about 4k, given average driving habits. A good synth oil (M1, Amsoil, Redline) should be fine for at least 6k under similar conditions. Somewhere on this board, there's a used oil analysis of an Si using M1 (I think it was 5w-30) for 7k, and it held up incredibly well.
