hey, you really should add 3rd gear into this too. thats the one that tends to grind more from what ive heard. just make sure the real petition says 2nd and 3rd.

but i do have 2nd gear notch/grind.

1-2 gear slight grind. Got my 2nd gear replaced by the dealer, a couple hundred miles later same thing happens.

I'm thinking its more of a shift linkage problem, but I'm no mechanic either. Going back to the dealer this or next week and have them look at it again.

I'll post again, If I learn something useful.

signed the petition.......got the joy of being # 69;) but seriously...we need more than 69 people with problems. everybody has em. if they dont, either they are VERY lucky or they dont know what a grind feels like. i drove 3 eps including the one i bought and all 3 did it.(didnt think it was anything at the time...just shifted funny. the notch is unacceptable the grind is beyond unacceptable. if this was VW id expect it but honda!? they brought you the integra GSR trans and it was flawless. this CAN be fixed.

i thought i sucked at first too. but i shorted the clutch for the first time ever today and felt what that feels like. its not us.......maybe your lucky....but shifting isnt as hard as some of the manual trans snobs think. i mean im willing to bet hes one of those "ive driven stick since i started driving when i was 11 back on the farm and now im 60 and im a better driver because.....blah blah blah" but honestly......clutch in shift gear clutch out repeat. we're talking synchronized honda transmissions here. there really shouldnt be that much room for error. but there is error and its not from the driver.

hey eggboy.. are you sure your completely still when putting it into reverse? because the ep3 wont let you put it into reverse if your car is moving forward or backwards. so that may be the problem.

Holy crap, I just thought I was driving like an idiot. I never ground my EM1, then I bought this and from 1st to 2nd I had to train myself to pace my shift...push clutch, slide out of first, pause for engine to rev down...slide into second, pause for synchro spin-down...release clutch.

I can still get a nice wheel chirp but, christ...it feels like I put ten seconds of my life on hold just to change up one gear. Granted I probably won't need the fast shift that often but having to concentrate on an upshift should be the last of my concerns. Does it get better with age? I know trannies take time to get broken in and loosen up a little.

I guess my EM1 babied me with it's broken-in, flawless, half-pedal lightning shifts. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to cry about one more reason I miss my ebp. :'(

my car has just now rolled over on 44,000 miles..... the only thing i have found to keep the tranny some what decent and this only last for about a week or two because we have an open engine bay of sorts....the problem really lyes in the shift linkage on top of the tranny....either the bushings go shot really quick or something of that nature.... i found if i WD-40 the shift linkage in the engine compartment it will keep it down for awhile just a quick fix for all those that are getting majorly pissed off by this, mine started at about 20,000 miles and i just got used to it.... Well hopefully this means something and we can get the trannys in these cars fix via new bushings or whole replacements.

I bought my '03 Si off of the showroom floor 1 week ago with 13 miles on it. It has had the problem since. If I try to change into 2nd from high rpm, it will grind. I have to let off for about a second for a smooth shift. Further, the '03 that I test drove with 150 miles had the same symptoms. I hope a recall is in the works, or at least a TSB.

Well, I decided to write Honda about my tranny problems now and not wait longer (only had my car a week or so). Below is a copy of the letter I'm sending. You can replace the stuff in brackets to modify for your car. I would recommend sending this certified/return receipt requested (go to your post office, it will cost about $5). That way, you know that Honda received it and who signed for the letter. It fit on one page in word at 10pt for the body and 12pt for the sig and title. "VIA CERT... RETURN" is bold. "From the..", the date and your contact info at the bottom are bold and centered. Make sure that it looks good, though (lined up, etc...) lol...

Dear Sir or Madam:

This letter serves to inform you in no uncertain terms of an issue currently at hand with my [insert year] Honda Civic Si. More particularly, a transmission problem with the possibility of failure on a whole.

I purchased said vehicle on or about [date of purchase] from [dealer] in [city, state] with [number] miles. Upon purchase I noted that when shifting from [first] to [second] gear, at or below the allowed rated RPM of 6000 and with a fully depressed clutch pedal I was unable to complete the task without the accompaniment of gear noise unless a dramatic decrease in RPM is made. All other gears are accessible at the allowed rate of RPM without similar results.

As of now, this is not impacting the ability to change gears; rather, it impacts the ability to change from [first] to [second] gear as provided within the allowed range of RPM in an expedited manner,

Dude, you need to take a step back ok. First off, it isn't a huge ass issue. Like a safety one, where a recall would be in order. Some folks have problems and some don't. When you try or do put her into first going faster than 15 miles per hour like you, then you are going to f*ck all kinds of stuff up. That is how your tranny gets f*cked up. See a pattern ;)

This petition won't change anything. In my humble legal opinion, Honda of America has made a good faith effort to remedy the situation, to wit: There is a TSB for our transmission (although related to the RSX, it also is for ours). No recall has been made because certain elements have yet to be met. A lil reading for y'all:

March 11, 2003
From now on, automakers must refer to all "safety improvement campaigns" as "recalls," the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) decreed today. The agency said the change is effective immediately.

It may seem nonsensical but the agency has been letting automakers waffle about whether a campaign to replace or improve a component is a "real" recall. The legal obligations surrounding a recall are more stringent than those that apply to a "fix." For one thing, recalls are immediately released to the press, resulting in negative publicity.

Recalls are also retained indefinitely in the NHTSA database and dealers generally make a more stringent effort to notify customers and encourage them to bring their vehicles in quickly. "Fixes" have not previously been in the database and motorists who miss the initial mailing may not find out about them.

The distinction grew out of NHTSA's 1995 decision to let Chrsyler use an "improvement campaign" to fix about four million minivan rear-hatch latches. Automotive News quoted unidentified NHTSA sources as saying automakers have increasingly been trying to avoid calling their repairs recalls.

Still in a gray zone are the many "maintenance bulletins" automakers issue for problems that are not deemed to be safety-related. Motorists learn of these only if their mechanic tells them or they learn about it through the Internet.

HTH. I could probably quote what a HOA spokesman would say if we asked him why a recall has not been made by the gov't:

"We are following all accepted practices for our industry and have provided for the customer what the law requires and beyond. The transmission issue does not merit a recall as the problem will be resolved while still under our warranty. As this TSB is for new cars, all new Honda customers have years for this minor defect to be fixed free of charge. Further, this poses no risk to harm of any occupants or fellow drivers."

We all have the same problems some more than others ! I grind into 2nd when shifting and sometimes I have a problem with reverse :'( ! ..............(I think as a good gesture by honda they should sell all of us the type R 6 speed for the cost of shipping to our doors and we can call it a day !) what do you think ? :D

Yeah I posted to the petition some time ago, and I still have to ask: they bring back the Si...knowing full well its going to get used for tuning, and aggressive driving yet they give it a shitty set of stock tires, a roley suspension and a tranny that acts up for even the most tame of drivers? I have to ask...wtf lol

I came back to this thread because my car reminded me of it last night. Sitting at a light where the lanes merge about 100 yards ahead. I wanted to be sure to pass this slow ass caddy driven by a very old woman. Light goes green, I pull out. I am not even being hard on the gas because she was going slow enough that I could easily pass her before the merge.

First to Second, ok....Second to Third ZZSSSSSKKKKRRRRIIIIITCHHHH......The goddamn thing catches and grinds as I am casually shifting. I've owned 3 hondas now, this being #3. Steadily losing faith in honda, especially after I hear how much shit they are giving people about it when it goes in for repairs.

Ya know...I just noticed this on my car. I got it a week ago and it only has 300 miles on it. Particularly the 1-2 shift. I want to take it in but are they actually going to do anything about this? I would hope so

I mentioned this to a rep at a local Honda dealer who has a taffeta ep3 and all she said was, "it's an econo-car with an econo-car transmission, what do you expect." I certainly hope this is not what we can expect from honda...

Mine sometimes grind when I shift to 2nd. And sometimes can't seem to go to first gear. It doesn't go in all the way and I could feel. Same with the reverse. (59,xxxMiles)
They should recall all k20 tranny after they fix the problem. They should also give us the 6sp we deserve, and the i-vtec engine we paid for.

Is this petition still even active? 2 posts ago it was 2004 :tehehyper:
Not being able to shift into reverse sometimes is normal, right? Just let out clutch, push in, and try again?
I grind shifting into 2nd but only when redline or close to it. :mwink:
Anyone else under this circumstance?

1st-2nd....click...3rd.

my solution was 1st-2nd-let off clutch in neutral and back in-3rd...NO CLICK

yet I hate doing this as it is a .100 sec

People, stop posting here. this thread is going nowhere. it was posted 6 years ago, Im pretty sure Honda would have done something by now. Sorry but you all and we will just have to "Deal" with our transmission problems.

Besides, threads like these are heaven for junk mailers and other people that you dont want to have your first and last name plus your e-mail address.

change your tranny fluid and shifter bushings = no more grinding...or don't jam the shifter in.

Some days are better than others. Very frustrating for a car that has such a reputation for great performance. I have probems with all gears except 5th. Help! 2003 si.

I actually called Honda Assistance today and if you report problems with your car on file with the representatives they will try to issue a recall. I filed transmission problems and steering coloumn noise, which most people experience and if we could get enough they'll do something about it.

Just call 1-800-999-1009 and go from there.

Holy cow! A lot of people have the same transmission problems. 1-2 is notchy, at high rpm going from 2nd to 3rd it will grind. It would be cool if we all got a recall. Itsdinoto@gmail.com Anthony

Wait what? Reread your post and edit it to make sense a little bit more please. Sounds like you have a 5 speed and keep going into 6 gear(aka reverse) and it grinds gears because it goes into actual reverse...?
