From Import Tuner comes this quote in a column about tuning the '03 EP:

"The engine has been proven to make 230 hp with mild bolt-ons."

(See the rest of the story here: http://www.importtuner.com/tech/0307it_ppcivic/)

In the story, though, they add less than 14hp for about $1400 doing the usual "mild bolt-ons" (i/h/e).

Any idea what's up with this? When was it "proven" that our little K-series can crank out 230 with mild bolt-ons? These guys blowing smoke out their tailpipes or is a car mag's definition of "mild" different than it is for the rest of us?

On a K20A2 (type S) motor, I believe it. On ours, no way in hell.

I dunno, but their $720 exhaust system only added like 3.2 HP and lost torque  And the motor lost even more torque when they added the DC Sports header. Interesting.

Interesting article, and I remember reading about some company racing CTR's and getting 230hp with bolt-ons, but thats with the K20, not our engines. :(

I think the SRI is the best investment. A header and exhaust seem to only give minimal hp gains and an overall loss in torque. Someone should do some dyno testing on different exhausts/header setups to find the best combo! :D

compared to stock 133hp my car gained roughly 16hp from intake and cat-back exhaust to make 149

I really hate to say this..but that article is about 4-5months old. And if i am correct there was a huge discussion, about this.:)

Fair enough.

Yes, the article is from July and it has been discussed at length in the forums, but what I didn't find discussed from a search was the claim about the 230 from the mild bolt-ons. If I missed the thread on this, I'd appreciate a link.

None of us really think that is close; even to the fly wheel. So we only made jokes about it. To the wheels the A2 produces anywhere from 150-180 whp stock. Mild bolt-on maybe around 180-210- including flash IMO. Toda package is quite attractive.

First, the 230 is crank, not whp. So we start at 160 chp stock.

The article is still FOS, but it's not full of as much.

Maybe someone from cybernation convinced the writer that the stage 1 was a mild bolt on. hehehe

quote from IT:
Pros: The K-series engine is turning out to be a valuable commodity in the aftermarket world. For one, it's got JMD counterparts, and two, the engine has been proven to make 230 hp with mild bolt-ons.

if you cant type JDM second nature than you know shit in my book.........hahaha fkn JMD cmon editors!!! yeah i wish we could get 230 hp out of an a3 but that is purely fictional.
