Sorry, Glen. Just red Xs. If you're using Imagestation, you'll have to find a new host. (Don't know full details, but that's what I hear.)

Is the tranny installed yet? If so, how's the gearing compared to the SiR? Does it pay off with the new head? How's the LSD aspect? Does it seems to corner better?

I'm still debating which direction to go right now, but one way may be an A2 swap with LSD, so I'm eager to hear if the LSD pays off. Congrats on the new tranny and keep up the good work! You're still my number one techie here (Joey's a close second). Please don't leaving us anytime soon. ;)

Keep us posted.

I started the shifter modification/removal yesterday. Here are some pics.

Clips removed

Left shift cable removal, rotate it couterclockwise and slide it out.
These are both really difficult to reach by hand and I used long needle nose plyers to rotate them. They slide out just barely and are the most difficult part of the removal/install process.

Right one is even tighter, rotate in the same direction.

Shift assy. out.

This is what you need to mod. This part is held on with a pressed on washer and you will need to deform it or destroy it to get it off the shaft. You can get another one from any hardware store or the dealer. If you want to get fancy you could use a die on it and have a lock nut in place of this. The zone below, that is lined out, is what has to be shaved off. (I plan to do this mod without removing this shift mech and retain the integrity of the assembly) This alows the shifter to move right enough in order to reach reverse in the 6-speed.

Derek, no damage from shipping from what I can tell. I will have the tranny and a bunch of other stuff on by the weekend. Good luck with your project and post some pics!

I got the wiring clip(s) and pigtails for the lockout solenoid today. Ordered it from a local Acura dealer. I could not get just one, they send them in 5's. Not that expensive anyways. $27.00 shipped overnight. I also got a variety of molex pigtails from a Honda dealer here for free. He dug out his tool box and gave me a handful. I will need to fit a wire for ECU connector C, pin b-7 that will run to pin 2 on the lockout solenoid. ECU is @ Hondata today and should have it back tomorrow.(Kpro)

Here is a pic of the Lockout solenoid wires and connectors. I have 4 extra, so if anyone needs one, let me know.;)

Glen,

When I put in my k20a I am going to have to use the k20a3 harness as I didn't get one with my motor. Keep me posted. I'll need one of this connectors.

Derek, I tried that connector yesterday, it's not the one you want. I have ordered another bunch and should know tomorrow. I will revise the pic and P/N's.

Well I have almost everything done that I intended to do so far. I am still debating if I will use the level 2 driveshafts. I think level 3 may be a wiser choice and need to find out if there are changes required to the stock splines to accept the level 3's.

Anyways, I got it out on the road today and sheeite, what a wonderful difference over the 5-speed. Acceleration is just day and night from the 5-speed and grip with 235's and LSD is amazing. I won't know how much it can handle until I have properly broken in the clutch. It's hard for me to tell where the gains are coming from. The gearing ratio of the tranny or the lighter fly or the Hondata Kpro. It's a great combo and I need much more time to absorb it all. The clutch is real grippy and I still have to make an adjustment to the clutch pedal. Right now I have to sink the pedal all the way back to get it to let off. It will grab within less than an inch of release.
Kpro is set to the Hondata std. #4 program currently. Rev limit is 8600rpm and vtec engagement is 4300rpm. Smooth and responsive as I remember it in the A3 flash BUT so much better with the A2 head. Dyno tuning will start next week when I get all the info and am familiar enough with it to start playing. I datalogged my short trip today and am still deciphering it.
Willwoods are still fresh and will also require some break in time. Nothing but hella stopping power from them. I also painted my rear calipers black and replaced the pads with Hawk pads. Tomorrow will be clean up and then it's out for some break in. By the end of the month I should have some time slips if my real work doesn't swallow me first. lol:D

so if i was going from a base 5 speed trans to a type-s 6 speed, is it just a simple bolt-up, what about the reverse lock out mechanism.

myeverlovinsir
03-05-2004, 10:49 PM
Yep its a simple bolt up. I still am waiting on the connector for the lockout solenoid. (Was recommended the wrong one from both the Honda and Acura dealers.) I now realize that you would have to be really intentional if you hit reverse when trying for 6th. The distance is not even close to 6th. Besides that, I doubt you will do any damage trying to put it in reverse from 5th, the gears are spining way too fast in opposite directions and you would never be able to engage them. The sound effect alone would make any idiot correct that in a hurry! I drove it for the first time today and can say there is no rush for the reverse lockout solenoid, however I will still put it in.
To answer your question the 5-speed ECU does not have the capability of controlling the reverse lockout solenoid. hth;)

I know allot of guys on here have voiced their concerns about their transmission problems. This is my second transmission, an upgrade from the 5-speed. I have never had a transmission problem before this new one on any car I have owned. (5 speed was always smooth and direct) I wanted to talk about the issues some have said about knotchyness, grinding, not being able to get it into gear, or out of gear. After installing the new tranny I had some real concerns about just what I had gotten. Straight from the garage I noticed something was not right. I would burry the clutch pedal all the way in and could not get it to go into first, and if it did it was a painful over pressured struggle. I pumped the clutch pedal countless times and still it was a real bitch to get it into gear. Once in gear and rolling along the shift to 2nd was somewhat clean, however when I would go to 3rd it would grind and never sync up. Same thing with 4th. And I could not even reach 5th or 6th on the highway at times. Just locked out completely. I knew I had some real issues here and it did not end there. I would stop to park and back up. The reverse gear would never stop spinning and I would be grinding it to a halt to get it into reverse. After a few times of that, I shut it off and placed it into reverse with abnormal effort and then started it up to prevent any undo damage, but I still could not get it out of reverse afterwards without a struggle.

That said, I was really contemplating taking it in to have a complete overhaul done. I thought for sure I had damaged syncros and/or wrecked gears. First thing I did was check the clutch oil reservoir for the level. No problem there. Then I manually started to play with the gears from the engine bay, lifting and depressing the shifter into all the gears. No problems there. In fact very smooth. Then I adjusted the clutch pedal push rod to fully against the hydraulic cylinder pump behind the clutch pedal. BINGO! All of the problems went away after that! It's so smooth now that I can shift with 2 fingers and never have any problems, just as I had with the 5-speed. I have driven it for 2 days after the adjustment and not a single missed shift or problem whatsoever. Here is a pic from the manual.(pg 12-4) It's not that great of resolution because I could not get we-todd to work. (Having problems with login.) All you really do is loosen the lock nut and spin out the threaded rod to fully against the piston. (D and E in the pic) The amount of play and how far I moved the push rod out towards the piston wan no more than 2-3mm. Thats all the adjustment that I could make and was perfect. What it did was help release the clutch more cleanly. It's a simple fix, but I found I had numerous symptoms associated with it, that most were complaining of.

HTH.;)

I have to say you might be the smartest guys here. I have not had any tranny problems to date, so I can't say that it helped. I wonder if this really is the problem with most of the problemmatic trannys.

I went today to get the other set of connectors for the lockout solenoid from a local Acura dealer. Well they don't fit either. Fawk! The dealer has no idea what the part number is and their database does not allow you enough detail to get individual connectors from the harness. I am through guessing what the connector is for them and don't want to spend 350 bucks on a new harness. So I will find a junkyard to sift through and get it that way. Until then I am content driving around without it.
