For you guys who have reach 10,000 miles, what kind of oil do you use. I realize there is a bazillion others of Oil threads, so I'll try to be specific.

And please don't get into conventional vs synthetic flame war. I just wanna see what most of you guys are using.

Thanks

I use Mobil 1 0w-30

i am jus shy of 50k and im running mobil 1 0w20 synthetic with prolong engine treatment... works great.
from what i understand about oil technologies is that the low number is the viscosity it runs when its cold (under 30 somethin degrees), and the high number is for hotter temps (i think its 60 something)... but if it isnt that cold, it'll run at a 5 viscosity due to additives they put in there (if you feel a 0w20 and a 5w20, you will see there isnt a difference), so this is fine for at least cali wheather... i wish i could break this down like my homeboy does, but i havent been thru the training and all he has, so this is the best i can explain this...

btw... hondas are supposed to run 5w20 not 30...

You should have included the recommended viscosity for the synthetic oil in your poll. Mobil 1 0w-20 has been putting up very good UOAs. I'm currently running Synergyn 0w-20, but Amsoil, RP and Redline all have synthetic 0 or 5w-20 street oils.

I use Amsoil 5w-20.
Order it by the case direct from Amsoil.

Mixing dino with synthic is not that bad. It happends the first time you switch to synthic. Some companys even sell it like that in a bottle. I think castrol's is called a synthic blend oil. Its not bad for your car, but it kinda defeats the purpose of using synthic oil.

I dunno... I thought castrol syntec was "special" and mixing regular and synthetic WAS bad...

Isn't that why technically when you first switch over your supposed to have a flush out done??

I had hear your first oil change you do in 3000 after your change and then you can go your longer synthetic oil changes after that. Just wondering what is the norm for synthetic oil changes in millage. I know my mom's BMW is every 15,000 with Mobil 1 from the dealership.

technically, yes... The oil will last ALOT longer. the problem, however, is that deposits and pieces of shaved metal get into the oil and scar other engine parts... That dosen't change based on the oil you use (well, technically it does, but it still occours). It is recommended that ALL cars (including your mom's) get oil changes every 3,500mi to 5,000mi depending on how hard you are on it. Remember, too, that stop and go in rush hour is more harsh on the engine than cruising at 80mph for an hour...

Your mom should get oil changes every 5,000mi to be safe. Sure, so long as it's in warranty the dealer will handle any mishaps, but what about the rest of the car's life??? after the bulk of the damage has been done in the first 5 yrs...

Same goes for the EP.

go check out this site also. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
This is where I made the decision to go with Amsoil.
There is an article in there about Amsoil vs Redline.
This is out of the article on the site.

"In the Four Ball Wear Test, the smaller the wear scar, the better the protection.
Tests conducted by an **independent lab**, (the Falex Corporation), show that AMSOIL series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Oil provides up to four times more protection than other popular synthetic and conventional oils."

20w-50 tho??? wow - do you put that in the EP??

I thought 10w-30 was stretchin it...

How are your winter starts?

Well I am not saying put 20w-50 in your car. It is just a test of that specific weight. Go check out the site there are many articles on different weights. That was just the first article I grabbed.

Also I am jealous of your Boost. I want that.:'(

I wasn't talking about syntec. There is a "castrol synthetic blend". It costs less than syntec and more than GTX.

esmith13

then it's me that is incorrect... I am referring to whichever oil is technically regular oil mixed with synthetic oil... I didn't know the correct name.

Eric

read the bottle... the castrol synthetic blend is part synthetic and half regular... but they have additives in there to blend the two, so that doesnt mean you can jus add castrol oil and castrol synthetic and get the same thing... btw... its jus safer to flush your system every time you change your oil from regular type to synthetic or lower viscosity... i do it whenever i change from one type to another, even tho i only use synthetics...

With Synthetic oil(0w-20), do you still have to check the oil for burning?

??? you talkin bout oil coking up? well, either way, 0w20 is jus a number indicating the range of viscosity the oil runs... and like i stated above, it'll still run a 5 viscosity unless the temp is under 35 degrees or whatever temp that is exactly...

if you're worried about coking, oil running low, etc... use an additive like i do. prolong is really great... works like they say it does in those infomercials. its been tested by one of my friends (not intentionally) and it really works. i cant say enough great things about it...

with about 13,000 miles on my car now i am using royal purple synthetic 5w-30 in conjuction with their synchromax synthetic tranny fluid. i combined those with a hamp oil filter and spoon magnetic drain plugs on the oil pan and tranny. i love it!

I have run Mobil 0 Synthetic in both my 03 Hondas since my 2nd change in each. This product has a seal that says "recommended for Honda Oil Changes" or somethin' on it. It's equivalent to 5/20

I don't think you would ever want to do anything but change you oil. Unless you are doing some major work. I could be wrong?

Just got my offical shop manual today and it says 5/20 no matter the temp.. I use Mobile One as well.

Would you guys suggest Mobile 1 0w20 or 5w30 full synthetic? I live in Maryland where we have below freezing winters and 100+ degree weather in the summer. I'd like to use the same oil year round just to stay consistent. What would you guys recommend?

Oh, I also spend most of my time on the highway, but do occasianaly push the car kinda hard, as I suspect most of you do, if those factors affect what I should run.

Thanks for the help!

I'm in Kansas, where we also see temps from -5F to 105F, and was a little nervous about using a 20wt oil in the summer. So far, it looks like Mobil1 0w-20 holds up very well in these motors at any temp. I'd take it over the 5w-30, though there's nothing wrong with either and the 5w-30 comes in 5qt jugs, which will save some cash. Either way, you should get very good protection.

Mathman.

What I've seen is that's much better to use synthetic than regular oil. I'll be changing the oil and oil filter this saturday. I think I'll go with Mobile 1 0w-20.

What about oil filters??? I was thinking to get K&N performance oil filter. Any recomendation???
