View Full Version : 10,000 mile oil change interval---for real?

Had my EP for about six weeks and coming up on 2K miles fast (I drive about 75 miles per day when I drive to work).

The manual says that the oil change interval is 10K miles. That seems like a lot. It also says not to change the oil early the first time. Is that for real?

What's best practice? I don't want to super-baby the engine, but I also don't want to abuse it.

i changed mine within first 2000 miles. no way can this car go 10k

check your oil regularly. these things burn it up first 10k miles...

i would check it twice a month...

My manual says change the oil every 5k, and filter every 10k. I do both every 5k. I switched to mobil 1 synthetic at 15k miles and use a K&N oil filter.

Also, first oil change is at 5k and people say the oil from the factory is a special break in oil. I'd leave it till 5k for your first change. And as already stated, check it regularly as our engines burn a ton of oil for the first 10-15k miles.

I thought manual said every 5K miles...I haven't looked in a while.
I'm going to switch to synthetic soon and go every 3-4K, like I did
in my old car. Should be fine.

Also, not every car burns oil, like the other two posters make it seem.
My car has burned little to no oil and I'm at 13.5K. I did my first
change at 5K and everything has been fine so far.

My manual says every 5,000 miles but I do mine every 3500. I have a free service until 15000 anyway from my dealership.:D

shouldn't we follow the manual carefully for the 1st oil change since the oil inside is special oil for break-in purpose?

if you do the 1st oil change earlir, would you end up not having a properly broken in car.........FOREVER, and by your own fault?:crym:

I dont believe in the "Special break in oil" I changed it at 2500.
I change the oil between 2500-3500(depending on if i have been to the track or not)

I don't have the manual in front of me, but I think it does say to change the oil every 8,000 to 10,000 miles. I don't buy that either. I aim for about every 4,000 miles myself.

And seriously, GO CHECK YOUR OIL RIGHT NOW if you haven't already done so. I think just about everybody here burned about a quart for every 1,000 miles until about 3,000.

Proper way to check oil - drive around until your car heats to normal temp. Park and wait 10 minutes for the oil to drip back into the reservoir (but it's still hot). Check your oil. :-)

The manual recommends 5000 OCI for severe and 10000 OCI for normal.

I currently am running a 7500 OCI and am performing my own comparison test between dino 10w30, M1 5w30 and M1 0w20 by performing oil analysis.

So far with my driving which is pretty hard I have found that a 5k OCI on dino is fine and could go longer, a 7.5k synthetic is no problem as well. Once I decide on a weight I will more than likely do 10k OCI with oil analysis.

Here are my oil reports:
10w30 5000 miles (http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000438)
M1 5w30 5000 miles (http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000634#000000)
M1 5w30 7500 miles (http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000634#000000)

I should have a 7.5k M1 0w20 report in a few months.

My engine only burned a 1/2 quart within the first 5k. And I only had to add about a 1/4 quart in the 7.5k interval. I left the factory oil with Moly in it for 5k.

So do yourself and the environment a favor and leave the oil in for 5k. Unless you like to follow the quick lubes and oil companies money making scheme.

come on guys just change your oil and filter every 3000, if i drive really hard for a day i will change the oil right away! And as for the whole break in oil i know most cars are supposed to change after 1200 so i just did it, my cars still purrs like brand new so, i think its fine

My service tech at Miller Honda had an 03 ep3, and said they needed a change every 3000 for the first 10k. He said they burn thru oil pretty quickly in the first 10k. No way to verify, but he seemed to know his stuff.

I am 60 yrs. old and still change my own oil. Every 3,500 miles with a new filter. It's your motor get the dirt out. Is there a trick to getting the filter off easier????????? THe ground is getting harder.
