I was rolling on 18" wheels, 225/35/18 Toyo FZ4s, and Sprint springs (2" drop) for about 8 months. This is what happened to my rear tires. Enjoy :)

One went flat, so I put my stocks back on. Then I realized that the other had about 2.3 miles left until it blew up. I have since purchased a camber kit, some Tein springs to raise the car some, and some new Toyos.

only extreme camber alone will do that... you might also have a toe issue.

The back wheels have a dynamic that changes whenever you change the height or camber.

are you familiar with the term "Rotation" ?

if not-- are you familiar with "Camber Kit" ?

it not-- are you familiar with "own3d" ?

I forgot to mention that I initially did not have too much of a camber issue. My Sprint springs sagged a lot, dropping the rear another half inch probably. Over time the negative camber got worse and eventually things went boom.

did you get an alignment after your sprint springs were installed?

i only ask because toe that is out of spec could also cause that.

I believe it. I've got a Progress spring drop w/ 215/45 17(40mm os) and it's been about 5K miles. I can tell that I'll need to reck'n w/ the camber in the rear soon. My bro has the same tires (Nitto Neo Gens) and he's got some inner wear though not as bad with his S-Techs. The Neo Gens are very camber tolerant, but still will wear on the inside fast over 5k miles. Welcome to the world of "high performance" handling.

-5 degree camber and less than a month of driving got me the same, only i blew the tire losing the sidewall :(

did you ever get an alignment? It is my undestanding that if you get an alignment, this wouldent happen? am i wrong?

Thanks

yes...I doubt that if you guys got an your cars aligned after installation of the springs that the negative camber would own you that much. Negative camber on its own should not kill tires like that. However, a bad toe combined with negative camber is a definate no no.

I've got no camber kit, rotate my tires every 6,000 miles and I got a 2 inch drop from H&R, stock tires...

No excessive wear...

Is that the Outside or inside edge of the tire?

I have negative camber in the rear but i rotate my tires every 2000-3000 miles:D

Who knows. Maybe his car was so low he couldn't look under the car to see the tread was gone. ;)

I never had an alignment after the spring install. Reason being, at the time I was having a lot of trouble with people screwing stuff up on my car when installing things. I got the springs installed back in 2002. Couple weeks later tried to put some 18" Racing Hart C3 on only to find that all of my lugs were stripped out. Took the car to my dealer and realized about $900 worth of non-warranty damage was done by the spring installer. So I got everything fixed, got my C3s on, and sued the shop that installed my springs for my $900. Then a couple months later, early 2003, my car was at my dealer for some sort of service and my C3's were stolen overnight. Claimed it on my insurnace and bought some 18" Racing Hart GT5s and some new tires. When I went to put my new wheels on, I saw again that 2 of my lugs were stripped out. I fixed that and then had everything working. So, I was just annoyed with suspension and wheel stuff and found it easier to ignore my camber issue and ignore the aligment. I had planned on getting coil overs and camber kit and all that, but I never could decide on a kit. So, time passed and the tires took a beating. Now I have souvenirs :) I plan on getting an alignment and my camber dialed correctly once I put my new springs on next week.

Just plain dangerous. For everyone who dosen't take care of their car just think that everyone that sits in your car you are putting in danger everytime you are behind the wheel. For all the tight asses out there just buy the damn camber kit. Hope everyone learns from this. This is borderline criminal if you know that the tire wear is that bad and you caused injury.

people still don't get it. He did NOT get an alignment after having the springs installed. He most likely had serious toe issues. An out of spec toe will cause the inside of the tire to wear prematurely like that. As long as you dont' have an out of spec toe, negative camber alone(up to a certain limit) will not cause that. I seriously doubt sprint springs, or any springs, even with a 3 inch drop would cause more than -3 degrees of camber.

I just dont' want people to get the impression that camber alone will make your tires wear prematurely like that.

i agree.. i am dropped 2.5" .. drove for 2 years on tires and they wore out evenly. no camber kit or anything.

:D it only barley looked like 3 to me... but the blowout wasnt bad at all... i was on the freeway, and i only felt the rear dip a bit, not dramatic at all... i guess 35 series would be the reason. after i got new tires, the alignment said -5 on both rears, -3 in the fronts, so i decided i needed a camber kit :D

Yeah me too, I've had my car lowered since last feb. I had some wear on the front, from taking the corners a little too tight, but other than that I ran my stock tires for almost the full mileage. I'm getting camber soon, within this month, but no hurry for me.
