I was using 87 Texaco for a while but then I moved less than a mile away from a Super Wawa and I've been getting 87 there for the past month and a half. Gas has kinda increased to from 31-34mpg average. I found that interesting.

I was just gonna post a thread asking the same ?. My b/s'n buddy told me higher octane could burn your valves faster depending on what kind of ride you have. He told me to ask someone who knows for sure (that's how I know he's full of s**t). So the highest octane is the best as long as it wont mess up my car right? Gas here in so cal is at an utterly rediculous price right now too... it SUX!

According to this author, if "your compression is 9.5:1 or lower, 87 octane should be plenty" then our car which runs 9.8:1 (correct?) would be best served by running 89 octane...??

Always Chevron 87 oct. Gonna bump it up to midgrade 89 for my next tank. I get some pinging at the top of 3rd gear. Hopefully that will take car of the pinging. I'd hate to have to buy 91 premium because it's about $.30 more expensive then 87 around here. One of the reasons I bought this car was the trouble free good performance with crap low grade octane...so much for that benefit.

I would love to see more literature or a nice grit about compression ratios vs. octane ratings. Anyone? I'm looking around, but haven't really found anything valuable yet.

Man do I feel bad for you Cali guys, 2.29 for gas? The last couple of weeks in missouri gas price has run from 1.57 for reg, +.10 for mid, +.20 for premium 93, all the way to a not so stunning(Cali compartive) 1.75 or so for reg.... Anyway..

I run midgrade 89 in my car. The intake occasionally backfires at this octane, I am assuming it is because of the octane being 89 and not 93.. but I am not exactly sure that is the reason. I just think that sometimes because of the intakes(CAI Injen) propensity to consume huge gobs of air, if you hit the gas at the wrong moment after you accel it throughs off the sensor and causes that backfire.

uhh, dude sorry but octane has nothing to do with quality unless you are buying, for instance, the shell 93 with the cleaning agents...

93 is the wrong octane for the stock a3...using 89 doesnt make you a cheapass if its the correct octane for the car...

the octane has to do with flame propagation and using the wrong octane in a car means the cylinder will be firing too early or too late and create a knock situation, you might not hear the knock, but it would still be present...

it has nothing to do with gas quality or mileage you would get...

haha. all octane is, is the antiknock properties of the fuel. here are a few reasons to switch to a higher octane, or things that would require different octane ratings

high compression
advanced timing
leaner a/f ratio

if you are running a stock k20a3 which requires regular grade fuel, you will not see an increase in performance or any better millage by running mid grade or premium fuel. and, any change in the "smoothness" of your motor is all in your head.

the way i see it, its a plus that the ep runs regular and is as fun to drive as it is. all the cars that came out at the same time as the ep that were in the same class required premium.

I was always told that the higher the octane the slower the fuel burns, which to me would mean that its less likely to prematurely explode (due to high compression or carbon build-up on the piston heads=knock) before the spark plug ignites it. I've been using 89 octane Shell lately because subconsciously I buy the "v-power" BS :mwink:

Always used premium in all of my cars for as long as I can remember...maybe I'm wasting $$, but at approx. 20 cents more per gallon, 15k miles a year, 30mpg average...it works out to around $100/year, or like $8/month.
About the same $ as eating fast food once a month, which I hardly ever do...

I've heard it said on other car forums that using a higher octane gasoline can speed carbon formation in the motor. Anyone have any experience with this?

Here in germany we have the K20A3 engine in some 5 door civic, it has got in here the same power as you have it in your Ep3.

Gasoline stations here have got 91 octane, 95 octane and premium gas with 98 octanes.

Honda sys for gasoline: use 95 octane gasoline, 98 octane gasoline will not decrease or increase your engine power, gasoline which has lower octane could also used for "getting home", but engine would have full power and needs more gas...

I use plus because the owners manual states that 87 and higher is ideal for this car. I have tested many different gas types in my area and can now only put Shell's 87 gas in my EP. She's a picky gal.

89 Shell for my EP3 when I had it
91 Shell or Chevron for my E36 (we don't get 92 or 93 here =[)

The only time anything other than 87 has touched the nips of my injectors is during track days. Simply because by both tracks that I frequent only the Premium is non-Ethanol blend. The 87 and 89 are both E10.

Anyone who isn't running a FI setup or doesn't have a ECU flash specific for Premium and is running anything other than 87 is just wasting money. From the factory, your car is tuned, ready and wanting of 85-87 octane. It runs worse and gets less milage on higher octane fuel.
