i hear ya. ive been debating if i really wanna spend around 300 bucks for a decent detector, i mean i CAN go the speed limit, but if i have it, i dont have to worry as much... at this point i just cant justify it...hmmm

i usually try to stay the speed limit...it's just the times when you least expect it. anyone have ideas on how they get you on the freeway? i always hear that they're pacing you...how accurate can that be...assholes

well, on the interstates(freeway) i know in a lot of places it says "Speed Enforced By Air"

they have airplanes flying overhead and they look for cars going faster than others, they put the radar on them and if theyre speeding, they radio to a trooper on the grond in a cruiser and he pulls you over

it's just the times when you least expect it

thats what i mean too:cool: its kind of like insurance for if you ever have to be somewhere and arent sure if you wanna chance it. its nice to know whats in the area ahead

I don't have one because:
1) the good ones are pricey
2) By the time that thing goes off i wont be able to slow down quick enough before i get caught :D

Can detectors pick up radar from those air units?

I invested in a Valentine One about 2 years ago. I didn't buy it so that I could speed, I bought it so that I could locate the cops that have their radar out and check my speed and adjust it accordingly.

At the time I bought it, I was driving my blue '00 Si (which draws enough attention itself). The radar detector is just kind of a "heads up" on where the cops are.

I bought the V1 because after reading reviews on several detectors, I felt it was the best one on the market. It's a bit pricey (about $400), but well worth the money. While it obviously won't save you everytime (no detector will), it has helped me on several occasions in which I might have gotten a ticket for going faster than I thought I was.

For the most part, I drive the speed limit. I learned my lessons when I was younger and paid hefty amounts for several speeding tickets. Now I don't speed because I'd rather invest my money in stuff for myself rather than giving it to the government or my insurance company.:D

If you're getting a radar detector so that you can speed, forget about it and save that money (so that you can pay your next ticket  ). A radar detector will warn you - it will not save you.

V1 has saved my ass on a number of occassions. It will pick up a signal from a long ways away, and is definitely worht the $400 IMO.
2) By the time that thing goes off i wont be able to slow down quick enough before i get caught This is not necessarily true. I have had many opportunities where I had ample time to adjust my speed.

Laser is different though, and Valentine does a good job, but it is usually not good enough. Thanksfully laser is usually used in smaller spaces city streets, etc...

I've also got a V1, it's the best radar detector out there, period. It's not flashy and it's expensive, but it works. The other guys are right it's not a license to speed, you've still got to use sense when driving.

for a graduation present, my dad bought me one w/ a GPS system in it.. it's bad ass! I love it! It tells you ur speed, direction in whch you are goin.. u can program it to tell you how many miles you have till a city, and how long it'd take you to get there! I LOVE IT!! I'm too lazy to go out to the car to see what kind it is.. maybe i will in a lil bit.. cya

Yup, after a long debate I bought a Escort 8500 x50 for $300. I'm going to be moving soon and have to make a couple trips from Montana to Oregon and the speedlimit is rediculous in Oregon along the Columbia river. I think it's 60mph:p Plus I'd rather spend $300 on a detector than a speeding ticket for going 80 in a 60. I'll post a review of this radar after going out to Portland this weekend.

I have to "know" where they are;) :D

But I dont speed where I know where cops are going to be at. Like the Bayside Bridge in St. Pete to Clearwater. The FHP sleep out their.
