View Full Version : I misshifted again on the freeway today....

This is the second time in 3 months i've done this but, i was trying to pass a semi on the freeway and i went from third gear to second gear instead of third gear to fourth gear. I dropped the cluctch for a SPLIT second and i heard a pop in my engine.

But after i put it back in right gear again i've notcied no change in my driving whatsoever. So my question is this...
How do i tell if something's wrong when i misshift like that? And who do i take it to? Can the dealer take a look at it for free?

how are you holding the shifter with your hand? Are you placing your palm on the top of the shifter? or are you holding pistol gripping the shifter? pistol gripping the shifter will tend to make you misshift back into 2nd. Try putting pressure with your palm on top of the shifter, applying pressure from maybe around the 10'o clock or 11' o clock area and pulling straight down.

90% of the time i always w/ my palm on the front of the stick and then the other 10% i hold it from the top.

But this time i held it from the front i just happend to misshift it cause i really wasnt paying attn to my stick i was too busy look at my blindspot to make a turn. sh!t happenz i guess but thats besides the point i just wanna what the hell i broke in my pride and joi

open your hood and rev the engine, if its not making any funny noises you're probably OK.

Well I misshifted a couple of times and my motor ended up blowing up 6 months later. What happend was I weakened a valve retainer and it finally broke. I would take it to Honda and have them do a Combustion and Leak Down test. Its gonna cost ya like 200 bucks but hopefully if there is a problem then youll catch it. And no Honda wont warranty it if they have freeze data showing you that you misshifted. Just went thru all that BS myself and had to buy a new engine:( BUT they got me A2 and tranny for me!!:D So Im mad but happy.

A shit load since it was Honda doing the work. I got an 03 motor with 22,000 miles on it with tranny and ecu plus labor plus taxes for a grand total of 9210.99

Thats a lot but around here its what everyone will charge.

Ive got a warranty on the motor and tranny plus if the motor goes bad then the labor is also covered to put another one in.

Hell a new Si motor is 11k and a type s is at least 14k.

well this is my story, I was headed to LA one day and then a 92 civic gets next to me, and i really didnt wanna race but i was like Fu*k it. so we both start "riceing" on the freeway and shit and till this day i dunno how but i smacked myself silly afterwards. i was in 5th gear then dropped it to 2nd :o , so my engine just made a weird noise and the engine light came on, it was still rolling so i didnt worry about it. i was like fuck it ima take it to the dealership tomorrow, well it didnt make it. i had it towed to the dealership and when the car would sit in idle it would make like a clicking noise. it was awful and of course i pull the car up and the first thing they say is were u racing the car?? i was like nah man come on now  . but they said they wouldnt cover me if they found owner abuse so i was like damn guess ima be shit outa luck. so i told him that if i had to pay i had to pay cuz i was leaving to iraq and shit. so i guess he felt sorry for me because he said like 3 days later u got a blown head gasket and its covered in the warranty. i was like :D . well yea man that was my story. moral of story if u are an unexperienced driver dont rice around i learned my lesson the hard way. but see u were just driving so it doesnt make it that bad. sorry for the long post but since i am in iraq i dont got shit to do lol.

correct way to hold shifter is like how you grab a ball.. pommel?(sp) .. you shoduln't hold it like you hold a penis.

I don't really hold a penis on a daily basis...so that's not really in my nature ;)

I have my four-speed civic now and I'm really used to that. I test drove a few cars so far, the EP being one and I don't like the change to the 5-spd in regards to the actual shifting. I know it's about the same but even during the test drives I would get fidgety when downshifting from 5th-4th and I would sloooowweeeely let out on the clutch afraid the engine would whine. Guess it'll just take some time getting used to. I'm sure once I have it a couple months it'll be second nature.

But you touch 1 ;) I agree about having your palm on the top of the shift knob. Having all different ways to hold the shifter seems a little awkward to me. But thats what the website says so im gunna try it for awhile.

Good find! I used to shift like that but I got lazy and now just hold the knob like a pistol or palm on the top. Looks like I'm going to try going with my old technique

Its true for 7300 I could have had an ITR motor, ecu, tranny, lsd plus install, but i would have had to send the ecu to Hondata to get the speed limiter taken off and paid a but load to get my car out of Honda since they already worked on it. It was better for me to just take the big hit and get the S motor. I can go to any Honda dealership or Acura dealership in the country and have it serviced, cant do that with the ITR cause its an import and they wont work on it. I like to travel by car and hated putting miles on my 2001 ITR. If I was just using my car strictly for roadracing then I would of considered the R motor. But I need it for a daily driver and road race car and I rather put miles on an S motor than an R motor.

IMO of course. To each his own. Peace.

I don't know the specifics of what you were doing, but if you are passing someone you usually down shift, not up shift, to get more power. If you were at red line in 3rd, you were going 80, and you shifted into the 2nd, you most likeley felt the tremendous deceleration from the engine being over revved, and only by luck nothing got damaged. the engine tops out at about 50-55 in 2nd at red line. If you were not at redline when you mis-shifted but at about 5000 rpm you shoud be fine.

Well i was accelerating and i was about at 70 and i was inteding to upshift not downshift but yeah i dropped the clutch in 2nd for like 1/2 a second if not less. But its been about 3 days now and she still purrs like a horny porn star :)

btw 2nd gear redline for me is about 60 and 3rd gear is 85 i was probably goin about 70-75 mph

i seriously dont know how all this misshifting is happening. my ep was my fist stick and I have never misshifted when hauling ass around or racing. is it a problem with coordination? i am not trying to be a dick or anything it just that I fand it hard to believe that you could force it into first and not notice after you are above 10mph

didnt it feel wierd ?

it felt horrible, not so much weird. i was trying to get on the fwy and merge w/ traffic... and instead of throwing into 3rd i threw it right back into first.. :( i just didnt concentrate on the shift.. probably too aggressive. (thinking too much, "its an Si, lets get this thing moving!".) thank god no after effects occured to date from that mishap. lucky lucky... :D
