Is there some reason i only get an avg of 180-190 miles at gas light? Did i mess up while i was breaking it in? i heard that it would get better after the first oil change...nope, still the same shit. My first tank i got 145 miles....145 miles!!! is there something honda can do? it pissees me off when i c ppl saying "yeah i get 300+ at light, with mixed driving" when i grandma my car i get like 230 MAX? plz someone say there is something i could do to fix this!

Reset ECU
Check o2 censor
Change oil and filter

145 Damn. Something isn't right. I've never gotten below 200 no matter how hard I drive it. I'd try resetting the ECU.

What mods do you have?

I've got v2/magnaflow, and my best mpg on the highway was 37 mpg, and we had a lot traffic at times, where we would be stopped for about 30 minutes.

Around town, I usually drive harder, just because I love the intake sound. If your car is stock, take it to the dealer and have them look at it. That just doesn't sound right.

you've got a pretty big problem, i would definitley bring it back to the dealer and have it checked out. i never gotten below 230 on a full tank
good luck

i do ALOT of around town driving, but i almost always keep it under 4k rpm. I just installed my injen CAI(thanks to TheMutt for a great buy;) ) and i reset my ecu during the install, but ive filled up twice since then and still getting 18-19 mpg. i guess ill change my oil filter, but not the oil seeing as how it was just chaged at 5300miles or something, and im only a little over 6k. man i dont know what to do?!?!?

I'd take it into the dealer if I were you. Have them check it out. Something ain't right if that's all your getting for gas mileage.

One thing that contributes to poor my poor gas milage is the shitty gearing we have in our trannies. My old GTI had a custom tranny with a taller 5th. I could go to my girlfriends and back on a 1/4 tank (160 miles round trip) and that was going 80 to 85 the whole way. Looks like I am going to start looking into a 6 speed swap.

stop putting in gas

" I use straight TAng Bitch... and i get 450mpg :)"

j/p

when you drive it hard = low gas mileage
when you drive it the speed limit and never redline= SUPER MPG

Well said. If you drive reasonable and still get crappy MPG, take it to Honda and see what they have to say..

when was the last time you inflated your tires? take it to the dealer and rick james the service advisor if they say they can't do anything about it.

I rememer the same thing happening to me right when I got my car, like 240miles per fillup, but that was mostly or all city driving back then. It did get better as the miles rolled on and when I drove on the highway more and now I get around 30mpg.

i think another reason is your rate of acceleration. u can always keep it under 4k and still get crappy gas mileage. if u drive like ur in a race (not saying that u r) u are going ot get worse milage even if u shift under 4k. when i first started to learn to drive in my ep3 i used to get crappy milage about 210mpg. now that i know how to drive my new car i average around 250 till the fuel light shows up.

If you're talking about the RSX-S tranny, don't bother unless you're also going to get the slightly taller final drive. Its 5th & 6th gear ratios are the same as the EP's 4th & 5th, so if you're using the same final drive ratio, your highway revs won't be any lower.

You might be able to get the same top-gear results if you just swapped the final drive gearing, but you'll be giving up some acceleration across the board.

Isn't this a moot point since the final drive WILL be included with the RSX-S tranny. Even though the RSX has the same 6th gear ratio as our 5th, it has a lower FD (4.4ish vs. 4.76 in the EP3), meaning the motor spins less. He will be around 500 RPM lower in 6th gear w/ the RSX-S tranny from what I remember.

Guess so -- didn't think of that part.

Anyone remember the game show skit on Saturday Night Live that Jesse Jackson hosted? It was called, "The Question Is Moot!", where the contestants would try to answer some politically-relevant question, and Jesse would interrupt them by exclaiming, "The question is moot!..." and quickly moot-ify the question.

Anyway...

The tankful I'm on now is 87 or 89 octane. I'll see what my mileage is like the next time I fill up.

So then from the research people have done it would be worth it to put a 6 speed in. With the gearing the SI motor would be running at about 500 rpms less then the stock SI 5 speed.

Weird, i've never put anything lower than 91 in my car and always average 27-30 MPG.

I wouldn't do just the transmission, though -- I'd want to put in either the K20A or the A2 motor as well. Six close-ratio speeds just seem like a lot of short shifts when you've got that low 6700-rpm redline.

With a higher redline, and more power to still have some oomph with the taller final ratio, the A2 & A engines seem perfectly matched to the RSX-S 6-speed. Honda knows their cars better than we do.

Yeah if I were going to do it I would spend the extra money and do the JDM K20A with the ITR 6 speed. That way it would cover all the bases.

HOLY CRAP, you could get 210MGP!! damn!!!, j/k we know what you mean.

but yea anyways, i only fill up with 91 octane as someone else said and i can get about 300 miles per tank.

like i said earlier in a post, take it in to a dealer

I use to get 200 miles (20-22mpg) til the light goes on. That was when I way driving 90% local. Now I work at a different location, I use the freeway instead. I get about 300 miles (26-29 mpg) till the light goes on now.

Soo.... for you EP3 know it all, is my car running bad? I don't redline, I drive 60-65 (trying to save gas) and I shift about 3-4k. My tires are at 32-34 lbs in front and 30-32 in back. I fill it up with 87 octane and oil level isn't low. Only 3 engine mods, gutted stock airbox, K&N Filter, and DIY Ground Wires. Running on 16" inch rims and on Tein S-Tech Springs, if that makes a difference.

It'll be nice for you guys to help me out too. Cuz I'm thinking of selling my car for something that could get me better mileage and cheaper insurance. It will be..... the ugly stock xA.

Throw a set of really tall, narrow tires on, and inflate them HARD.

185/70/16s or something. 45 PSI should do the trick.

Do you let it rev?

I drive mine plenty hard, and get 25mpg whether I'm launching like John Force, or like my mother in law.

0-W20 Mobil 1, Mobil 75W-90 oil in the trans, Kumho 712s in 205/45/17 35psi front / 33 psi rear. AEM CAI.

19 MPG is WAY wrong. your fuel map is funny, or something.

will having a lowered car effect gas milage?

Since ive put the K20A2 and 6 speed in my gas mileage has gone up. From 25mpg to 30 mpg. Thats with driving hard daily. My car in 6th gear, with A2 motor, is so much quieter than my car, with A3 motor, in 5th gear.

Do you have a gas smell in your car? Cause it sounds like you have a gas leak. And with fuel injected engines, there will not be any puddles under your car unless it is a major leak. It will be a vapor and evaporate.

If it makes you want to drive faster, then yes. ;)

Shouldn't affect it any other way, though.

im also realy sick of my cars crapy milage.

i have no mods, and if i drive hard or soft its the same if i get 300km ( aprox 190 miles) per tank...

no leaks, normal oil and filter changes and only 20,000 kms on the car.

Just curious, but how much gas do you have to add to fill your tank back up?

freidaddy

thats wierd, 145 on a tank of gas? I get 270-300 depending on how hard I drive it.

We all understand that our tank's capacity is around 12 gallons, right?

If it takes ten gallons to fill up, but you've only driven less than 200 miles since the last time you filled up (completely both times, too), then it's definitely a problem.

Hmmm isnt it true that our cars gas guage is off anywaz? Since this site was down I've been using Honda-tech alot and it seems like the Gas light goes on when we have 3 gallons left or so.

My tank was werid...I filled it up. 40 miles later (City driving) it dropped to 3/4 tank....then it went to 1/2 at about 60ish miles. But then its been chillen at 1/2 tank for about 140 miles or so. Now ive got about 218 miles out of the tank but it look like the guage is about 3 lines above empty...My car is brand new with only 420 miles or so on it. Maybe it might be the Shell Gas I put in which is the 91 Octane? or is this normal?

Plus I dont accel fast because im still trying to break in the engine and I shift around 3-3.5k

stephen
06-09-2004, 05:17 AM
The gas light usually comes on with 3.5-4 gallons left in the tank.

just out of curiousity how do you plan to remove your oil filter with the oil still being in the engine? and managing to slep a new filter on, while keeping the oil that you have in there now?

Well i was right about the 3.7 or so gallons left in the tank before the light goes on..here is what it comes down to.

The manual states we have 13.2 Gallons. So out of a full tank I drove 223.6 Miles and then my light went on today when i came home from school on lunch. So I went to the gas station(Chevron) and filled up my tank with 92 octance. Now, remeber my light went on with only 223.6 miles from a full tank. I filled my tank up and I got 9.463 Gallons. Now, 13.2-9.463 gives me 3.737 gallons left in the tank. This equals to about another 100 miles or so left. There for, our(mine) tank come on with an extra 100 or so miles left in the tank which is about 3.7 gallons.

Is this just like everybody else or is my car being retarded? Its a brand new 04 Si with only about 500 miles on it. And no I dont drive her hard=P and I acel slow.

Since my car is still under warenty, do you think i should bring it in and get this fixed? or is this just normal?

i read this thread awhile back and didn't get a chance until recently to actually track my gas consumption. My g/f just filled up my car;) at 327, the light came on around 300, but she didn't tell me how much gas it took to fill up, just that it was driving fine at 327, our gas lights are supposed to come on with 2-3 gallons of fuel, they are not that accurate and you can't be sure that you totally topped off your tank, so don't think your car has problems, but to the original poster you need to get that car checked out 145 is miserable 10mpg way wrong. laters
