Water Temp Gauge

I just bought a autometer water gauge, when I splice into the signal from the watertemp harness it throws a check engine light. It reads correctly but the watertemp gauge on the factory cluster is dead and throws the signal. Is there any other way to hook this up. Any help would be appreciated.

you can get the signal directly from the ect sensor, under air cleaner box (engine coolant temperature sensor).
also when I installed my oil pressure gauge, It canceled my indash oil light, as far as I know they won't both work at the same time. how about reseting the ecu to try to get rid of the cel?
