I was wondering....what type of oil does the dealership uses. I know that it is 5w-20 right? But what I really want to know is, is it good for your car once the car gets over 10K. Any thoughts?

well im curious about this too. I used synthetic 5w-20 in my previous civic at around 20K miles and it revved just a little quicker and got better gas mileage. When should i start the synthetic on the ep? :)

I have this deal w/ dealership that gives me free oil change for the lifetime of car and tires. Is the dealership's oil going to give me good performance or should I tough it and get my own oil (synthetic oil)?

My dealership uses the synthetic blend Quaker State. It's what they got, their price is less than any other place around, so it's a good deal for me.

I am going to start changing my own oil at 10k, going full synthetic (like amsoil, search it on google). From what I hear, going full synthetic (not mobil 1 or some other blend) is cheap insurance if you plan to keep the car for a while. And change it yourself! its a good excuse to double check other things under the hood...and spend more time with your car improving it when you are not driving it and making it older :) My buddy says make sure to get honda oil filters and if you're not cheap buy some replacement rubber washers for the drain bolt where the oil drains. You can also get a special wrench from honda that makes removing the filter 100x easier.

So you're saying to basically screw the free oil change and do it myself cause it is better for my car.......... Okay, I guess it is best for my EP.

I wanted to mention that synth is actually pretty affordable if you get it from the right place (amsoil sells their oil online by the case for $5 or $6 a quart). Amsoil says their oil can go 7500 miles without being changed. Everyone I talk to seems to say if using full synth go with 5000 mile changes to be safe. 5000 miles is about 5 months for me, and that seems cheap to be spending about $25 two or three times a year for better engine protection.

Mobil 1 is not a synthetic blend.

If your plan lets you change the dino oil once for free every 3000 miles I would do that. Let me see; free versus 5-6 dollars a quart and filter(5*4.4+6=28 dollars). If you race or are very very hard on your car it might be worth it, otherwise go for the free stuff.

If you did not have the free oil changes I would consider synthetic much more.

If you plan on keeping the car for 150k miles, change the oil at 5k and if oil prices and filters don't change you would have spent $840. That is $840 more than you would have spent, use the money for intake and exhaust or something else.

But if you did not have the free oil changes it would cost you $630 (3000 miles $1.5/quart, $6 filter). To me the differnce of $210 for less trouble of 5k vs. 3k intervals is worth it. But a difference of $840 is too much.

What is mobil 1 if its not a blend? I read somewhere that its "dyno based" ...what does that mean? thanks for clarifying

mobil 1 info (https://dallnd6.dal.mobil.com/GIS/MobilPDS.nsf/26b7c4b33367a4a086256665004e4266/61638dff7d0453b085256b8400618b40)

Mobil 1 is based on synthetic base oils, blends are based on dino base oil.

From the website
"Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM fully synthetic, detergent-dispersant oils are designed for passenger car and light truck gasoline or diesel engines requiring API Service SL, SJ or CF. Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, and 10W-30 also meet ILSAC GF-3 (Starburst Certification Mark)"

Also note that M1 does not have a 5w-20 out yet. Only synthetics that do are Redline and Amsoil (that I know of).

I know this thread is a little old, but I picked up some Mobil 1 pretty cheap this weekend. Target has them for $4.39 a bottle. That is the cheapest I've seen it. Most are $4.99 or 5 for $24.99.

Also, the oil-drain washers are metal, not rubber. FWIW.

Redline all the way, it cost $8 a quart but is by far better than sythitic blends. Also get a good oil filter, like K&N or Fram X3. you should use sythitic oil for your 2nd oil change on a new car. and you can let sythitic sit in your car for 7000 miles cuse it dosn't breakdown just gets dirty.
