There used to be a way to make the Si symbol light up on the EM Civics, i think you rubbed the back of the speedo with acetone or something. Does anyone know if it'll work on an EP3 gauge cluster?

It's definitely do-able. When I was doing my LED swap I was tempted but ended up not doing it.

Alright i guess we can follow the following links to do this, we just need a brave volunteer :winkm: hint hint.

Follow this link for instrument cluster removal (http://www.ephatch.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17681&highlight=instrument)

Follow this link for Si illumination procedure (http://www.jimmmmmmmah.com/Install/Si%20Logo%20Gauge%20Glow.htm)

I've never done this before nor have i heard of anyone else doing it on their EP, try at your own risk.

I've already ripped mine out 4 times for my LED light swap so it won't be an issure for me ;)........

I've already done some of the sanding and acetone so I should be good.....
If I had a camera I'd do it tonight.....Weekend project.

Nope....I sealed and sound deadened my doors, put in a set of CDT fronts and crossovers. I started on it yesterday and didn't get to finish it up due to some other crap. I didn't have a camera either so I figured I'd wait until tomorrow as I won't have the time today.

Dave, you get a chance?

Hmm...wonder if that's how it would work on our cars.

its possible to get the vtec light for the ep, but the vtec engages earlier compared to other vtec cars, so the light would come on alot and you might get annoyed of it, but i wanted to do this...well i will prob do so and have a light hook'd up to backside of the si logo on the cluster to make it lightc coe brighter or gibve off a different hue, i dont know

if anyone gets this done, cna you post pics? thanks

After reding this thread i tried the acitone trick to make my si logo light up. it didntwork because the area behind the logo semmed to be black plastic. also there is no light behind it.

So is this even gonna be possible with our car?

I would say no. but i didnt fully remove the plastic piece to see how much light travels through it. it may show if there were an led behind it. but theres not really space for even an led its flush against plastic. but as far as a simple mod u can forget about it. i did put some on the redline area it worked well to make it brighter. but if u didt know u wouldnt notice.

Guys, don't worry. I WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. I've been in there before and already have my plans. I just wanted to make it "extra sweet" so I had to wait for some "parts" to come in. It will happen as well as a little "extra".............Should be done by Sunday.

Stay tuned......... :D

Well peeps.....parts are in :D. It's the smallest affordable LED shift light I could find. Basically, I'll be stealth mounting it in a vent and wiring another LED to the "SI" in order to have it light up with the shift light. I hope to be done by Sunday. Here are some pics of the little booger:

It's all about dedication and being original.

I invested 30+ hrs just to have all my dash LED's red....If you're lazy - why bother modding :p .

Good point. I have around 15-20 hours into my custom dash for my HU and I still have around 5-10 hours left for finish work to get it just right. I thought I was done but I found a few mistakes I did that showed up after a few weeks. No were near as bad as my first try, but just some tweeking and filling to get it flush.

i will be starting a custom dash soon as well. let's just say goodbye to pocket under the radio and hello to volt, egt, and water temp :) did i forget to mention i loooooove gauges??? that will bring the count up to 6 autometer gauges. plus the more gauges the more people think yur car is fast, haha.

It wasn't just a light. It was a functional shift light.

oops. my bad i thought you had it lit up constantly, i just realized you had made it a shift light too. nice:mcool:

I'm just interested in having it just stay lit up. wondering what the process was to make the "Si" translucent enough to shine light through it:mconfused:

A scalpel and a steady hand. You have to:
- remove the cluster trim
- remove the cluster
- remove the clear plastic cover
- remove the needles (be sure to take all sorts of pics at idle, at reg temp and make sure it has a full tank).
- remove the over lay
- trim a section in the cluster for an LED, etc
- wire it up
- carefully scratch the paint from the back side of the si logo

If you don't have patience then I wouldn't recommend you try it. There are multiple pieces that can easily break.
