Well I have the startings for my K24, a K24A1 shortblock.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0656.jpg

I also have a TSX crank, balanced and micropolished along with a set of Ultralite Rods and a set of 11:1 Wiseco pistons from BPM. I will use a RBC oil pump/balance shaft assembly and K24A2 balance shafts. The Z3 head and K2's will also be going on this block, along with the RBC and maxbored TB. It should prove entertaining!

A K24freakaZ3oid

*** UPDATE***

The pistons and rods arrived
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0662.jpg

And then they went to SwainTech for extra thick Goldcoat and PC7
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0689.jpg

Here is the balanced and micropolished 06' TSX crank
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0691.jpg

Here is the block bored out for the 87.5mm Wisecos, just have to hone
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0703.jpg

I figured a set of ARP main and Head studs wouldnt be a bad idea
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0681.jpg

A comparison between the K24A1 rods/pistons and the Ultralite/Wiseco's, which is which?
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0708.jpg

This "was" meant for the 2.2L build,,,NOW it will find a home on this K24.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0692.jpg

And seeing as I will be useing the RBC head, I will need to add the TSX head gasket and the coolant divertor to the K24A1 block. The head gaskets are "very" different, notice the pink areas which highlight the differences. K20A2/K24A1 style on top and the K24A2/4 and K20Z3 on the bottom.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0699.jpg

I will be useing the RBC oil pump and pan as well. I replaced the RBC balance shafts and installed a set from the TSX(to match the crank). Here is a pic showing where on the cover i had to remove material to clear the TSX's larger weights.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0729.jpg

The IPS K2's will work well with the porting done, all done with the help of a SF600. Here are pics of the combustion chamber and ports on the Z3 head.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0488.jpg

before
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0443JPG1.jpg
after
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0447JPG1.jpg

Here is the Hytech Cam Tower oiling modification done to the #5 cam cap
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0524.jpg
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0523.jpg

And the head mocked up with the black powdercoated VC and RBC IM.

Yes Joe, those are SuperTechs. I am useing the OEM valve spring combo that is recommended for use with the K2's and have a 8500 revlimit.

talonXracer
04-18-2008, 04:02 PM
So far,,, powdercoating costs, ATI damper, and that is about it for the bottom end. I bought a salvage 06'TSX engine/trans for 1600 and sold it for 3800, then bought a K24A1 short block and the pistons and rods and then coating. The top end is a Z3 head that I bought 3 of when Honda had first released the RBC/Z3 head for sale in the USDM(they listed complete Z3 heads for 350) Then when they realized the mistake they went back to the original price, so I sold 2 of mine for a decent profit and the buyer got a price well below on-line prices.

That thing's gonna be awesome.

What made you choose the a1 over the a4 block? What about shortblock vs. longblock?

talonXracer
04-19-2008, 05:52 AM
I was lucky and found a complete shortblock for 300 and I already had the head, so why have a bunch of parts laying around afterwards that I didnt need, so shortblock it was. It wouldnt have mattered if it was a A1 or A4, either would have worked well.

It took about 10 minutes or so. alot of the newer Dremels overheat rather quickly, after they cool off they usually will start back up.

For major work I use a slightly heavier duty version/copy. 1/3hp with both foot and hand speed controls.

good luck on the build. i like your choice of products for the build. one question though. why did you go with a 11:1 compression ratio. wouldn't you have benefited from a higher compression ratio around say 12:1 with those cams?

Well with the extra thick ceramic piston tops, flatface valves and .006" total decking she is just a tad under 12:1, that should be decent.

I will post up all the info in another thread, but basically at idle the oil pressure is very low at the #5 cam cap(furthest from the pump). It has been measured to be as low as 4lbs. This when combined with heavier valve spring pressures and high lift, long duration cams, can cause alot of wear to the saddles, cams and rockers.
What this mod does is source a oil supply that is routed directly from the main oil galley after the mains, directly to the #5 cam cap bypassing the VTC and Vtec circuits(not used at idle, but greatly restrict the oil supply thru them).

k20a.org my friend, look up Nikos, hes doing this. he's just a fully built k24 short block, your choice of compression for pistons, for 2500 i believe, also if you want a long block with the z3 head on its 5000 i believe. for about 250~whp, NA thats a pretty good deal.

Looking for around 260ish with a conservative tune. The only limiting factor as far as rev-limit will be piston speed. Very seldom do I find a need to go all the way to the revlimiter around town with the cammed A2, so a 7900-8000 rev limit on the K24 should make it a reliable DD.

I have the block finished and on a engine stand, I only have to assemble it. But I cant find any of the Yellow rod bearings, they are on back order with no restock date. I may just hone the rod's out so that I can use a thicker bearing that are in stock.

I decided to clean up the drivers side of the Z3 head.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0542-1.jpg

So I found a TSX coolant outlet
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0741.jpg

I will be removing the outlet for the heater core and useing a AN-10 fitting there. Then I will be smoothing it all out and then having it black powder coated to match the VC and RBC.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_0742.jpg

As soon as my replacement port grinder gets here I will get to work and then post up some more pics before and after coating.

Very good!

In the time since you started building this things. The k24 market has exploded. I don't even remember what you are going to be running. But Do you have any power goals?

I don't know what kind of gas you have. But one thing i wish i did was get higher compression pistons. I went with CP because i wanted more then 11 but i didn't want 12.5 or 13. Looking back at it, i should have gotten 12.5.

I was affraid 12.5 on pump wouldn't run well, but it seems that on 93 it should be fine. Not to mention i was running e85 anyway.

talonXracer
09-29-2010, 11:14 AM
I went with 11.5 and had an extra thick ceramic coating added, 006" from the block and .002' from the head w/FF valves will get me to about 12.4 or so. I will be running a Hybrid 70mm TB, SSR/DTR header and IPS K2 cams.

I didnt want to swap out engines with the K20a2 still doing ok

The 102 or 103mm stroked out k24's making k25~26's are pretty nice, and put down some major power.
If you don't go stroked out, I wouldn't use the k24a4 bottom. The piston have been known to not clear the extra valve lift of the 3 lobe vtec heads.

But putting a z3 or a2 head on a k24 is common practice now.

I think if i got a k24a4 w/o going the stroking route then i'd just cam it and boost it the hell out of it. I'm really liking the idea of stroking one though. Just need to figure out the little details... Like what would the redline be, what CR would be good for NA, or if i wanted to supercharge it or stay N/A..... there are just so many choices.

If you are doing anything "Built" or stroked. Just get an ERL short block. Good bang for the buck.

Yes, You have to have a goal and direct in mind before you start spending money.

As for the k24a4, they do have some thin rods, so i wouldn't make to much power on a stock bottom. If your going to build Compression for NA anything 12 and over is good. Over 12.5 and you will be reaching the limits of pump gas. Supercharger i would do around 10:1 compression. Turbo depending on how much power you want to make, 8~10:1 compression. Nitrous i would do between 10-12:1

Those are my thoughts, which are only slightly educated guesses.

mad men take their time to plan...ive been building my race car since 04, and its just a rolling shell with a cage in it that still needs chassis work...sometimes it takes a while

Did the new owner of the big block get it up on a dyno to see what it was putting out?
