If im not mistaken all our EPs are numbered, mine is 335, if u look at your vin number its the first 3 numbers after EP.

Can hondatech or someone tell me if this is right?

i dont think thats correct. i went outside an check my SI and it says the exact same number as yours... 335 after the letters EP. so i dont think it could be right because we cant have the same nunbers. that would be cool though.. to have numbers like the integ type Rs.

That doesn't seem to make sense, may want to look again, your serial number is on your ownership.

"Mine's 33542 "

Try the last five numbers of the vin you seem to be looking at the middle five. mine is similar, the four is the color code i think.

Does it make you guys a little uneasy typing out your VIN after reading the RX7 article? Isn't that the only thing differing our cars is the last 5 digits? or are those letters in the beginning different also?

I thought about that yesterday. I guess we shouldn't start giving out our addresses eh?

the vin number cannot be reproduced without the full vin number. The vin number contains much information: what county your car was built in, what options it has what color it was originally, plus security information that can be used to verify whether it is a valid vin or not, giving out portions of your vin like what number it was produced is not going to give up any useful information to crooks.

Well the discussion here is that the last 5 digits are the only portion that differs. So a crook could go to a lot, grab a number and then have any of our numbers.

In the case of the RX7 if you aren't familiar with it. They used the VIN to have a replacement key made at a mazda dealer and then stole the car with the key.

Well I am sorry if thats how you interpreted the discussion, and others too if thats what they are thinking, you should always be careful with your full vin, but I am telling you for a fact that a person cannot take your last five digits, go to a lot and get the rest of a vin off another car and make a match. Every vin is different, as I said it includes much information and some security safegaurds. I can say for a fact that our vin numbers are not the same, beyond the last five numbers. I have read the RX7 post in detail and the mistake was made that the whole vin was given out and that the person knew where he lived. The most important information though is that KELVIN has a friend at a dealer that was willing to cut him a key.

I hope no one here gives out their full vin, but to clarify and to stop any uran legends the vin numbers on our cars are all different beyond the last five numbers.

Alright, this has me curious. I'm sure with a very simple explanation also.

I'm assuming (cuz this is the way I've seen *ALL* Ep3's, as of yet) this is the way it is:

SHHEP335 **** *****

&nbsp &nbsp ▲ &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp▲ &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp ▲
&nbsp &nbsp | &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp | &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp |
&nbsp &nbsp | &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp | &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp # of my car?
&nbsp &nbsp | &nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Color?

everybody's got
this (it seems)

If this is the case then one could get the whole vin as most of us have listed our colors.

if only it were that simple then I would be worried, but it is not.

Here is a sample breakdown.

the first digit from the right is the country of munfacturer.

the second is the car company, in our case honda.

the third through eight are alotted to the manufacturer and deal with engine size, model type of safety equipment etc.

the ninth is a check digit, this is derived by a mathematical formula based on the rest of the vin so authorities can determine if it is genuine.

the tenth is the year, for us it happens to be a 2 but these are predetermined numbers that follow the alphabet and then 1 to 9.

the last six numbers deal with the build sequence.

I hope this clears it up for everyone.

Ok, i think it s a little harder then, here's my vin, heres my address, can i have a key? What stops a crook from seeing my car parked in front of my house, getting my vin from the window, then going to honda and asking for a key? Someone else was doing illegal stuff at that maxza dealership if they cut the key with only that information. besides, are key's also have key code because of that chip in our key, that transmitts to the ingnition to start, they would need that too.

I realize he had to have connections at the dealer. Who knows, they can probably look up the key code by the VIN too. I'm not particularly concerned by this whole thing, it was just something I pondered. There is nothing special about my car that would make anyone want to go through all that hassle.
