Gas Leak Only While Getting Gas!

I just filled up at the Hess station and when the pump stopped i looked in my mirror and saw gas all over the ground. I looked underneath and it was dripping a little from the gas tank, then stopped. It only leaked out while gas was being pumped in. What could be wrong??

If you are lowered make sure the tire hasnt rubbed thru the filler tube.

Get under there and look for where the fuel is coming from.

It seems to be coming from the front of the tank, where the fuel lines meet. I just replaced the pump and filter on friday but I don't see how that has anything to do with this.

Okay I think I found the solution...

I knew something was up this morning when I got in my car and it smelled like gas. I just yanked the cover off the fuel pump in the backseat to discover.. gasoline! A big puddle of it. The black collar must have not been tightened enough :doh:

It is tough to get the collar on well (and properly)
It helps if you have a buddy hold the filter down while the other turns the collar.

One other important step...make sure the tick mark on the filter lines up properly with the marks on the tank outside the collar.
It should be turned slightly clockwise of straight forward.

You may also want to get a new disconnect fitting for the filter in case it was damaged form the last install. Costs like $1.50 from Honda.

Thanks. I just used the old one and it seems fine. jimmyjames you were right, something did go wrong!! haha hopefully this is the last problem.

thats one way to get a headache..glad you found the problem. That could have been dangerous.
