If you don't know which type, you can never go wrong with Honda MTF...

I use the Amsoil syncromesh MTF. That stuff is great and Amsoil says it has all the right additives that Honda recommends.

Good for high temps

i tried the RP and it was too lightweight. Honda MTF is the best and as long as the Amsoil is heavy enough it is gonna be better.

most of the aftermarket tranny fluids are made lighter for racing which is good for speed and heat but not good for DD>

You could even do a Mobil ! blend using 5w30 and add some 75w M1 gear oil but too muck trouble IMO.

check the prices on MTF at a couple dealers as I saw a wide variance in how much it cost.

Back in the day there was a big talk about Syncomesh tranny fluid. THe penzoil stuff is sold in disguise at Chevy dealers as OEM synthetic for corvettes and the like.

That would be the GM Synchromesh FM (Friction Modified). I've been using it for a while. However, chunky had posted some concerns about the oil breaking down quickly due to a higher load per gear surface area in the K-series trannies vs a Vette tranny. I don't know if that thread is still around.

I'm switching back to the new Honda MTF soon, both because of the issues chunky raised, and because I haven't noticed any improvement to justify the high cost of the Synchromesh FM.

I'm with 4angrybadgers on this one. I tried the GM Syncromesh FM and didn't feel any difference either. My next tranny fluid change, I'm going back to the new Honda MTF.

The Honda MTF is good stuff - something like $5 and change per quart.

The Amsoil one is lie $6.50/quart

I've been using the GM synchromesh/Pennzoil fluid now for nearly 4 years. 3 years of that it was a daily driver and the last year more or less a weekend/track toy. My transmission was apart last weekend to have a different final drive put in and according to the mechanic its still in excellent shape.

GM Synchromesh FM (Friction Modified)..

did definitely notice smoother shifting afterwards too.
