I'm looking at buying a stock 03 with 135k miles on it.

What are concerns/things to look for with that many miles?

Thanks.

Camshaft issues, and maybe timing chain wear given the mileage. Then your normal used car stuff get a carfax report, and inspect brakes and suspension, get a compression test. I have 95K on my 02, new struts lightly modded intake and exhaust and its still very solid.

cool, what is normal beyond oil changes? any big item that should have been done by now?

he says it needs a new catalytic converter, but other than that, runs good, he says a lot of highway miles which I believe as he lives about 50 miles from a major city and said he commutes a lot.

$6000 as is, sounds like a good deal to me...

An oem cat is gonna run you 1000 bux at a stealership. So get a race header/testpipe or aftermarket cat and ur good and your SI will perform better for less $$.

Like I said before about inspection, thats key to making sure nothing else needs to be replaced.

when buying a honda with 135k whats most important is that regularly scheduled maintenance has been performed.this car literally could go that distance with virtually no maintenance!but at this mileage theres lots of things that should have been done.wich would be costly if u had too do them.other than that the condition of the vehicle is a huge factor.6k is defenitely a good price with maintenance done and in good condition.

Read through some of the forums to see what kind of trouble people have had. Usually the threads with titles like "Help: Door locks won't work" or "Clutch question: Does your clutch squeak?" will have replies like "Yah, me too" and a whole bunch of people replying if it is a common problem. You might find out about things like door actuators that fail, cam-lobe galling, and clutch return springs that make noise.

So how did it all work out? Cat issues resolved?

cwmizner
07-07-2008, 03:14 PM
Loving my Si, thanks

The Cat... pretty weird actually, the prev owner said the cel would sometimes be on, sometimes off, he said he took it in and they said he need a new cat...

it was on and off a few times when I first got it, i got a used cat for 75 from someone on this board, but i never had to put it on...

the light has gone off and stayed off... i went for emmisions test, passed no sweat, the light has stayed off, so i haven't bothered to even open the package with the used Cat...

so why is the cel staying off? beats me, my only theory is that the previous owner drove the car REALLY SUPER conservatively (only reason i think this is because when he followed me home from the bank, he drove like a grandma).

so would conservative driving 'clog' things up? it reminds me of 'blowing out the carbon' on older cars, don't know if my theory holds water or not, just an idea...

i also put a tank of premium and some fuel system cleaner in, dunno if that had any affect or not...

bottom line, car is running solid, getting 30 MPG, I'm loving it.

did get my windshild cracked right in field of view, but have glass coverage, getting it replace tomorrow, then I'll clean up and post some pics

I've gotten most things fixed that needed it, thanks so much everyone, you guys have been helpful, this board rocks, ;)

Looks real good for thats many miles on it. Mines a 03' with 65k and it looks like your cars in better shape body wise than mine. i somehow end up parking by people who love to swing their doors into mine.

Right on. I have a NHBP 02 with 124k on it now, it's still going strong. It's nice to see that you're autocrossing it. It's much more competative in H-Stock than it was in G-Stock (where it was back when I ran the EP regularly at Autocross, I have a dedicated ESP car now). Watch out for those H-Stock Mini's! :)

My cat is going south as well. I get a check engine light occasionally on it and the usual rotten egg smell here and there. I refuse to pay 800 bucks for a new factory cat though so I've sort of been putting off getting a new one. Whenever it throws a CEL, I make sure to check it and confirm is the second O2, if it is, I just ignore it at this point, it eventually goes away after a day or so.

One of the few pictures from it's glory days, chasing cones.
