you will always smell the extra emissions coming out of the tailpipe, but it is very common, and normal for a new exhaust system to smell funny for a few days after it is installed. reason for this is that when the exhaust system is manufactured, a lubricant is applied to the mandrel arms before being inserted into the pipe when it is being bent to shape. what you smell is that shit burning off, and whatever may be on the outside of the pipe that is burning off. after a couple hundred miles, if you smell anything more than exhaust fumes, look at the outside of the piping for shit that could be burning.
i had a funny smell last week coming from under my car, and when i lifted the bitch, i found that a plastic grocery bag had managed to get one of its handles caught on an exhaust flange bolt, and proceed to wrap itself around my midpipe, right after the header collector. shit smells like a god damn glue gun

I never had any smell from not having a cat installed. I ran with no cat for almost 9 months and never smelled anything but exhaust, it is when you have an improper A/F and dumping alot of fuel that goes unburned, that you get any smell.

But you will get smells and smoke from the surface of the exhaust as it burns off the contaminants.
