I often wonder why manufacturers still specify an "overdrive" gear. It's just a top gear for highway cruising (if you think about it, ours really shouldn't be an overdrive gear since it SUCKS on the highway), so why do they feel the need to point it out? Cars have had highway-appropriate gearing for decades...

usually 4th gear ratios are almost 1:1, so anything after that is considered an overdrive.

Our 5th gear absolutely sucks for highway driving. It is one of my few complaints with this car.

There is an "Overdrive" button next to the ashtray.

Overdrive button is the button with the letters "A/C" on it,

Press the button and overdrive is activated when:ballchain: the light is off....

one of my uncles jokingly said we got the bottom 5 gears of a 6 speed box. he didn't realize how right he was. :mfrown:

Can't wait till I get my stimulus check, which is buying parts for the TSX 6th gear.

Overdrive sounds so cool, like it'd make you go super fast. Like overclocking.

I HAVE OVERDRIVE!!! (PPPEEEEEWWWW)

Its not so much just the 5th gear, its the final drive that really kills us. 5th is a 0.738:1 ratio which is pretty decent until you pair it up with 4.76 final drive. IMHO what we need is a taller final drive and a shorter 1st and 2nd.

I wish our car would cruise 80 @ 3.5K instead of 4.1K, i wonder how much of a savings that would be in highway mileage..

so how hard is it to change the final drive lucid moments? also, what tranny would that respective final gear come from?

yea, our 5th gear does suck for the highway. my 3rd gen prelude was the same way. the 88-89 models had the d2j4 tranny with the taller 5th gear (3,300@80mph), compared to my d2a4 4,300@80mph. our solution was as simple as the d2j4 5th gear or the same year accord 5th gear. much cheaper and easier to find then a TSX 6th gear I suppose.

Well the problem is that the gearbox I'm talking about doesn't exist. Swapping in a TSX 6th is the best option really.

Now if you are making enough power then you can swap in the taller final drive from the RSX-s and not worry about 1st and 2nd. Thats what I did for a while when my car was still a DD. Put my cruising at 80 at around 3600 or so IIRC.

a gear that causes the engine speed to be lower than the transmission speed is considered an overdrive gear..

I'm boosted, and 5th still blows great big donkey nuts.

Cruising at 4k+ on the Interstate is no fun, doubly so with a race header and a 70mm exhaust.
