Im looking for a change.. haha I was watching rob and big and noticed how they murder out all their vehicles.. I really like the look of flat black but when I asked my girlfriend, she said "it looks like primer".. so I wanna know your opinions on flat black.. I can see where she is coming from but I really think it looks bad ass to have no shine what so ever.. so what do you think???

you will probably hear mixed reviews about it. i am indifferent. a lot of people have done it before the show. do it because you want to do it. there are always going to be haters.

I've thought about doing it myself, but then my car is a track whore so its for functional reasons. If you have the performance to back up the performance oriented look that is one thing, but otherwise you need a mix of both.

i love the murdered out look! the thing with flat back tho, you gotta keep it clean all the time. it gets real grimey. if you watch later shows of rob & big, the rims and body almost look brownish. my rims are flat back and they get the same way. If you dont keep up on it, damn its a bastard clean.

I think it looks pretty cool as long as its kind of a satin color like the skunk 2 ep. with tint black rims ect....

I think flat black is a really neat look however, not every car can pull it off.

I really like to see cars painted in creative colors (not fast and the furious colors)

Isn't there a flat clear coat? I remember someone talking about it and you just wash / wax it like a normal car. I say go for it. There were some pics up before the crash of an EP (other than the Skunk2 race car) that had a flat black paint and it looked bad ass.

Yeah carizzma makes a flat paint and flat clear coat that goes one top of it so it virtually doesnt get scratchs. heres some pics of their cars and info on the paint:

About R-M Carizzma Flat Paint:
"At BASF, our main business is paint, where we offer multiple brands with a variety of applications. Carizzma which is the official paint of the TV Show Overhaulin', is a line under the BASF R-M brand. Carizzma allows a reduction in the gloss level of the clear coat, giving you the option to product any color in a flat finish. The technique and the product is essentially the same as any normal paint application; the trick lies in how BASF flattens out the clear in their proprietary mix ratio.

During the application process, however, there is one difference: On a regular paint job you wet sand and buff the finish when you are done. On a flat paint job, you skip that process, allowing the paint to simply air dry or bake.

Maintenance on Carizzma is very easy: Just hand wash, dry and you're done. The paint rarely scratches because of the flat DC92/DC98 clear and you never have to wax it!!!

the ep3 is the only true matte flat painted car on this page
the rest are all eggshell/satin, you cannot clearcoat a flat paintjob and have it still be flat, even if the clear is flat because you're creating a clear layer on the paint for light to refract inside of, creating some shine.

This is the 300Cinister show car form '07 SEMA. Its actually more of a satin dark gray. The red and silver accents really set it off.

Maybe if it had some sort of "misti-chrome" final spray to give it a hint of flair, otherwise the high contrast accents are deffinately needed.

I personally LOVE the flat black Skunk2 EP, its SO hot...but i've done flat black before, its a bitch to wash in the sun because it dries so much faster...make sure u only wash 1 body panel at a time and rinse right away! I let my g/f have somewhat of a say on my EP but on my old EF i just did it, it was stealthy, some guys said it looked like primer, but even had thumbs up from the hot rodders lol...heres a pic

I like flat black elements, not the whole car done as flat black.

BASF has really revolutionized the matte color though. Their polyester paint bases are easy to apply, dry quickly and with their matte clears can be washed just like normal paint.

I have some nasty rock chips on my hood and rather than a CF one, I was thinking of doing the center of my hood with flat matte black from BASF, along with some lip elements.

If you do decide to go with flat black, I would strongly suggest that you spray it with a spray gun, not cans. Otherwise you are going to be able to see all of the spray marks and imperfectios.

The flat black look can be laid out very nicely as long as your use a flat clear to finish it off, otherwise it will just look like a primered car.

BASF just came out with a new clear a few months ago specifically used for flats. It's not a cheap clear nor is the activator that u need to lay it out but BASF has the best product out there are far as this finish goes!

Sport Compact Car has a real thing for flat black paint. They have done a few WRXs flat black and I think a 240sx and a sentra in flat black. The last WRX they did in the BASF stuff. They made it look decent. But when they rattle canned their Blue WRX STI (which had perfect paint to begin with) i died a little inside.

JDMtunerEP3
08-15-2008, 05:45 PM
Yea if anyone really wanted to do a car flat black i wouldn't suggest rattle canning it.

I saw that car and as a painter my jaw dropped and i still haven't been able to pick it up.

You have to find someone who has experience doing matte colors and is good at it.

Not everyone can pull it off!

JDMtunerEP3
08-15-2008, 06:17 PM
Well not to be rude but there is alot of technique that goes along with painting a car.

It's not just laying what ever material your spraying down evenly.

You are dealing with chemicals that can be finicky at times.

Doing an entire car flat black and making it look as good as the cars pictured in this post is not an easy task.

You're not gonna get a finish like that spraying in your drive way with zero experience using junk materials.

My Eg is flat black......and soon will my Ep......the bad......there is no clear coatunless upgraded to a flat clear. So the sun will slowly fade the car unless it is garage kept. You can not use wax on it nor can you buff out scratches. The good thing about it is it makes the body curves seem so flawless and I become in a daze at times looking at it. The car being flat black is very easy to keep clean a simple rinse a day and a wash with waxless soap about once a month or so does it well.

I would have to say that the key component is good body work.....believe it or not dings/dents will show up with flat paint.

Also if you do take the plunge invest in a good quality paint.

my 2 cents.

owner of clubrsx.com/clubep3.net:
BASF Automotive Finishes and Chris Dye Racing have formed a business relationship to help sell and promote the Carizzma Colors paint line. "We have this new Flat Blue (as well as Black, Red, Green, Orange, etc.) and Chris is going to be one of the first in the scene to rock on his drag raced RSX. Everyone always runs the same stuff so we are happy to bring something new to the game other then what everyone else has. In anything you do, it is all about standing out from your competition and this new color will help Chris do that. Bottom line, you know where you are seeing innovation first, and that is from Chris and BASF!" says, Brian Fox, Youth Marketing and Corp. Partnership Consultant for BASF Refinish. "A lot of people do not know that we have body shops all over the world and can make any color a person can think of. From an OEM paint job to a custom one, any of our shops can do that for them. If you go to CarizzmaColors.com there is a body shop locator and you can find a shop near you that can do what you are looking for. Chris used this function to find a shop near him, which helps him get his paint job done faster." Chris Dye Racing is very proud to be the first Sport Compact Race Team to work with BASF and Carizzma Colors.

I like flat, But when it's true flat (single stage) it's super hard to keep clean. It always ends up looking greasy. Flat that is done with a Matte Clear coat is much easier to keep clean, and it's more durable.
