Heres a list of the materials
Putty knife, Steel wool, Grey primer(2 or 3), Painters tape, 100 medium sandpaper, 220 extra fine sandpaper, Duplicolor truck, van and suv flat black paint(4), Tal strip aircraft stripper coating remover.

Materials: I used the gloves for the aircraft stripper, it burns the skin.

Heres the aircraft stripper(I used one can,as you do not need much)

This diy will take you a while so you shouldnt be in a rush. First, I let all the air out of the tires and masked them off with the painters tape. Then, I sprayed on the aircraft striper evenly, it will make the clearcoat crack up like dried mud. I then took the putty knife and lightly scraped off what i could without creating craters in the existing paint. I then took the 100 medium sandpaper and sanded as much as i could off of the wheel trying to create a nice scratchy surface for the paint to stick too. The next step was too rinse it off and let the wheel dry. I then primered evenly and coated the wheel with that, I used about half a can on one wheel. Then, I went back over it the 220 extra fine sandpaper. I rinsed it off, let it dry. Then, I began painting even strokes with the Duplicolor flat black paint. Allowing 3-5 mintues between coats and dont forget to shake the can for atleast a minute before using. I went thru one can of paint per wheel. The surface texture is rough but if I wanted I could have re-sanded with about a 2000 grit sandpaper and touched the paint up afterwards. I am satisfied with the results and I hope my DIY was helpful and easy to understand. If you have any questions feel free to ask or pm.

I only have two finsihed right now and Im working on the third, im trying to take my time with them and enjoy the process. I worried about the tires myself, so I taped off as much as I could and washed it off as soon as I was done. That aircraft stripper is badd man, you should be 21 to by it. I sprayed it on and the wheels started crackling like some hamburgers.lol:mbiggrin:

Looks good. Where do you get the aircraft stripper? Is it really necessary - can you just sand it and not use the stripper?

sure did. accidentaly got it all over my hands. looked liek i had AIDS on my palms. to this day i still get horrible skin loss on my palms, randomly.

TIP FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO DO THIS

if you use aircraft stripper on the lip, you can actually give yourself a polished lip, but you need to be careful and make sure you clean it constantly and polish it all the time cause theres no sealant on it. worked beautifully for me!

you can sand it but it will take a long time, i got the aircaraft stripper from advance
and yes it made the lips supershiny

x2, you can get a satin clear so you can keep the flat look. I've painted a couple sets of wheels. Seems like every time I do a set with tires mounted I miss spots on the outside edge. Looks like you did a better job than I did.

Could the lip then just be clear coated and remain shiny with out worrying about constantly polishing it as fatdong suggested? I had picked up some cheap Nippon Racing rims for daily traveling and the lip has the "chrome" chipping off and I want to paint them, but I kind of like the accent of the shiny lip.

Murdered out, looks good. I tried to do this to my stockies just to see if they would turn out ok. The paint started bubbling about 3 days after I was done.

You should use some paint prepping degreaser after your done sanding and before you start painting. Also, most paints tell you not to use them if its really humid out.
I know its an old post...
