Hey guys,

So, It's been a couple of months since something went wrong in my Ep again.

Today I was driving on the highway right next to my g/f (who was driving her volvo C70 drop top). So she started speeding up, and since I have been driving like a grandma since gas went over 4 bucks (cruise @58).... I decided to finally punch it, because I haven't done so in forever and a DAY!

SO as she speeds up, I drop into 3rd gear, which takes it to about 5.7k rpm.... and I punch it, before I even get to redline my car makes the biggest BOOM I have ever heard in any car. That sh1t scared the living sh1t out of me, so I pull over immediately into the emergency lane, and my g/f pulls in behind me. So I get out of the car and everything looked fine, I thought my tire popped or something.

Then My g/f told me she heard that loud ass bang and she saw smoke coming from underneath the driver side of the car? So I was like WTF? I thought it was maybe a backfire, but wouldn't the smoke come from the tailpipe?

But I started the car again and it ran as if nothing had happened... so I got home and I typed this up.... So what the heck could of that been?

Yup thats proabably what happened.. My car does that from time to time its all good though its just air pressure that got stuck in the intake.

This isn't the "porn search keywords" thread, you know.

on topic: The location suggest an intake backfire as the others suggested, although the smoke kinda worries me. Inspect everything, just to be on the safe side.

What are you running for exhaust??
I'd get under the car and look at the area of the exhaust where the exhaust manifold/ catalytic converter come together and see if there are any signs of a leak or damage there.
I'd also look at the fuel rail and injectors to see if there's any sign of gas leakage there to something that gets hot under the car like the exhaust.

It might have also been dust that your gf saw and not smoke.. I mean if you have a cai it gets pretty dusty down there so when it backfired all that air it might have just blown some dust out. Just a thought...

I'm running a stock exhaust... I didn't do anything to the car except lower the front since I bought it from this married couple back in December. Though, I do think that the car probably has some kind of exhaust leak do to a wierd rattlesnake sound coming from under the dashboard area of my car.

The reason I am guessing it is a leak is because the car sounds fine when I drive it normally, but when I put the pedal all the way to the floor thats when I hear the weird rattlsnake like sound.

For example, Lets say I'm going 40mph in 5th gear, and then I press the gas all the way down.... it still sounds fine, but once I go like past 3.5/4krpm it starts hissing again. When im in neutral and rev it, it does not sound though. It also does not sound when I even take it to redline very slowly like in 3rd or 2nd, but as soon as I floor it... the hissing starts again.

But this loud ass bang I heard for the first time ever. I never heard that loud of a pop on any car. Sounded louder than someone letting off a shotty!

the hissing might be your intake sucking in air

sounds like ignition was taken into intake manifold...and finally to the intake...

So when it's would only this once when your made this, I wouldn't care about them...if it is often may should check your setup...

the rattle snake sound means that one of your spring bolts holding the cat to the downpipe is loose, when you gun it it wiggles back and forth and creates an intermittent exhaust leak.
Tighten up the bolts on both sides of the cat.
If that doesnt fix it there may be a gasket leak.
But i'm 100 percent possitive that ratlesnake noise is an exhaust leak.
I've had that happen to me like 8 times on older cars and it has always been a spring bolt on the downpipe to the cat.

I freaked out too when my intake first backfired. That's when I had an SRI. The CAI does it too but it's not as loud because of where it's located.

its also possible you have a broken exhaust hanger thats allowing it to flex.
look into those as well but im 100 percent positive that sound has to do with exhaust getting otu somewhere.

my cai backfires.. but i don't think that's what happened to you. "loudest boom you have ever heard in a car" probably wouldn't be that.

rattling noise is probably from the exhaust touching the heat protector, maybe but when you find the problem keep us updated

no need to aknowledge me, i didn't tell you what the rattle snake noise is or anything.
if its really fast, and gets louder the harder you push the gas, its an exhaust leak, its going in and out because of the exhaust swaying, most likely because this is one of the spring bolts attaching the cat to the downpipe or because there is some form of leak right there.

The heat shield/protector thingy is long gone.... That thing fell off like in the 2nd month of me owning it. That thing looked like swiss cheese, holes burn't throughout the whole shield. That thing scared me also when it fell off. I was kinda racing this kid with an old ass celica and then I hear this loud ass scraping and sparks coming from underneath my car.

I pull over and look under my car, then I see that the protector was hanging by barely one bolt... I took the jack out of the trunk, jacked that bitch up, and kicked the protector off... then i drove home. ROFL!

Thanks for all the tipz mang.... I'll have a look under the car prolly this weekend when I gotz some time!
