Memories, I once had a 98' Arctic White Z24. That 2.4L must have been a gas guzzling pig in Japan.

the steering wheel is on the right side...

in japan they like to do USDM things (plastic unpainted bumpers being one of the main things) Someone probably bought some usdm plates (for the look of a usdm chevy) or had some fakes made in japan.

but why they would have cali plates in the magazine article is beyond me

A lot of ads for JDM-only cars have California plates. I don't know why, I guess they want to make them look cool. Honda does this a lot.

Probably a deal they had worked out with GM so GM could sell rebadged Corollas as Geo Prizms.

I remember reading somewhere that the Geo Storm also had the 4-age motor from the corolla/mr2 or something like that...

yeah, a girl in my geography class and I were talking about the Toyota GM thing in the 90s. Her dad works for Toyota of America, and she interned at GM. They traded a few models to save on production and shipping costs. Apparently the cavy fit into a niche in japan, and the camry became the prizm here. Note, the new Chevy aveo is made by a korean subsidary.

You still have a lot of that trading technology between Honda/Toyota and GM, even to this day.

Toyota Matrix
Pontiac Vibe

another example is the Saturn Vue.

Saturn Vue's models with a 6 cylinder enigne, I think it's the 05 to maybe 07, not sure about the new ones, have a 3.5 liter Honda 6 cylinder engine(The one that is used on the Acura MDX) .

Honda made a deal with Saturn (GM) in order for them to be able to use GM's small diesel engine in Europe.

The L66 is an OEM V6 engine built by Honda but sold by General Motors in the Saturn Vue SUV. The L66 was acquired as part of a swap with Honda, who received the Circle L 1.7 L Diesel straight-4 for use in European Civics.

It is a 3.5 L (3471 cc) SOHC V6 with VTEC Variable Valve Timing and is made by Honda in Anna, Ohio. The same engine, the J35A3 is used in Honda's Acura MDX SUV. It is built at Honda's Anna, Ohio engine plant. It is interesting to note that the parts content sticker on the 3.5 L Vue states the country of origin to be Japan for both the engine and transmission.

In the Vue, the engine produces 250 hp (186 kW) and 242 ft·lbf (328 N·m).

Chevy bought Daewoo and the Aveo is a rebadge Daewoo

Yeah, I know GM had the Nissan VG30E in one of their minivans for a few years. Its too bad that Nissan/GM merger didn't pan out. I've heard it said that the design for 2.4 L Ecotec in the Sunfire/Cavalier was actually borrowed from Honda. Whether its true or not...:noidea:

Are you sure it wasn't the Mercury Villager that was the Nissan quest clone with the VG30? From what I understand the ecotec is a lotus design.

You are correct, the whole "Ecotec" term came at a time when other manufactures were trying to capitalize on honda's success with "Vtec", but they are not related.

Ahh, yeah thats what it was the Villager. I just remember going to buy a head gasket for my vg30E and seeing that it fit some minivan. As for the Ecotec, I think I got fed a line of BS from somebody who thought they knew.

I thought some USDM cars are seen as pretty pimp in Japan. Like things seen as "American" such as muscle cars, etc, are popular over there just like JDM stuff is popular over here. I was watching that Ted Kopel thing on China on the History Channel and it said that owning a Buick was pimp baller gangsta ass status. Different country, I know, but still interesting.

Tragedy would know. I miss his picture posts, btw.
