Thinking about getting compact Navi for your car?

screw it, you can use PSP as your friendly navi system

If you have older version of PSP (1000), dont even try this.

What you need:
PSP slim (2000) $169.99
8GB memory card $99.99 or less
JDM GPS sensor $70~80 on ebay
PSP car stand $15~$20
PSP car charger $15~$20

What you need to do:
Im not sure if its necessary but Mod your PSP. Mines modded.
Install the MapThis program, and set it up on your PSP
Using MapDownloader program, create the map you want (either ordinary google map, or satellite image map)

Good News:
Sony will release GPS program for United States very soon
and it will have turn by turn function, plus map image would be 3D

mounted with PSP car stand.
Night mode

GPS menu

Daytime mode
GPS shows speed calculated by GPS sensor, avg speed, altitude, bearing, trip time, total distance etc etc

Satellite information.
shows how many satellites are connected through GPS sensor

Pros:
Game, movie, pictures, MP3, AND GPS. all in one
compact size
looks cool
GPS does not lag at all, super fast update and speed is very accurate
night mode, day mode, track mode, etc etc
can set the POI
Satellite image map available
Speed warning function
you can even activate the voice function (record any sound you want and put them in the program)

Cons:
Does not have direction turn by turn
Takes around 2~3 mins initiation time to get GPS informations from satellite
Slim does not support composite(1 RCA) output for regular TV since it only supports component(3 RCA) or HD cable out put
Took me a long time to figure out how to make it work with JDM GPS sensor and custom MapThis program
You have to make your own map using Mapdownloader program

Basically you just have a map and your current location correct?

I think it's pretty cool if you have a psp already, but I don't think I would buy one just for this, as GPS's are dirt cheap now.

Good job.

why arent these a phone too, it would kill the i phone. I've herd that the psp can double as a tv remote and a garage door opener too. dont know if thats true but it'd be sick if it was

I believe the GPS sensor is only for slim version

software on the device is the same, just might not "clip on" the same, you could probably remove what ever it plugs in with and and stick it in there, the gps just wouldnt be able to clip to the fat boy psp

pretty awesome. More reason to get a PSP... I think I'd wait til it has turn by turn. Looks slick. Better than the GPS' I've seen.

another good thing about this is when your car runs out of battery

PSP is self powered so when you get lost in the middle of mountain and your car battery is out, you can simply look through PSP and find the way out

I used it for a week now

everyone who looks at it gets confused

they know its psp but they do not know its GPS :)

So is the only reason you can't use this on the 1000 model PSP because of the clip or plug? The sensor should just need the mini usb connection right? Also can anyone provide a link to the gps sensor?

Kudos for this though very very awesome!

Edit: after thinking about it it may be an issue with the amount of ram the phat psp has, which is prolly why skype won't work on the phat psp's either.

That's awesome. I'm too lazy to go through the whole modding process though. Hopefully Sony does come out with a US version. I'm sure it would help boost sales, I know I'd get another one.

I'm not sure that the psp actually has to be modded.

I did some researching and it turns out the gps has been around in japan for 3 years. So this should work just fine with the phat psp. After I sell some old parts I'm going to try this. I'll update to let everyone know what kind of luck I had with an older psp.
