View Full Version : my a2 build....shadowmd

so as many of u might kno, i can be quite indecisive....had a turbo'd a3, had some issues. swapped that out for an a2. went built head with stage I cams, then stage II. my timing chain snapped with the stage II's, thanks skunk2 lol. i then got my head rebuilt with the same skunk2 proseries valve train but with k20z3 cams makin 222whp and 158wtq with the mods in my sig. but when i say indecisive, im talkin about how i bout a s/c for my a2, never put it on and then sold it, pieced together a custom turbo kit, sold than without ever putting it on lol. so yea, a lil indecisive to say the least....oo and im on exhaust No. 10 haha.....so its hard to keep me happy, but i think i may of finally found something that will keep me happy. a fully built a2 that i can safely rev to 9k and perhaps a lil more :mangel:

here is my plan:
a2 crank (have)
a2 block (have)
eagle h beam rods with ARP bolts (have)
cp 12.5:1 cr pistons
ACL race bearings
ARP head studs
brian crower stage II cams
type-r lsd (hopefully)
type-r final drive
exedy flywheel
(already have, clutch net stage II clutch)
then my current setup

here are some sneak peak pics on what i have already:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c353/shadowep3/rod2.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c353/shadowep3/rod1.jpg

the block is in atlanta, chunky has another bare a2 block which i am using....

7-30-2008: ARP headstuds came in

lol sounds good :mcool: how's she feel? any guess-timates on power?

MR.Pizza
07-24-2008, 10:21 PM
I got as far as 30 degree hi cam tuning till I noticed the rotor was almost cracked in half so it's not really tuned for power yet at full boost. Down low and part throttle up to around 3-4 psi it's torque beast. Once it hits 3800k wot though it boggs and runs rich since I'm not tuned up there yet. I have no clue for actual numbers though:mangel:

9k is gonna be ridiculus. N/A is the way to go though, glad you picked this route.

I'm in Harrisburg only about 1.5 hours away, let me know if you need an extra pair of hands on swap day. No experience but I'd like to learn.

Good luck.

good luck on the build. i think you'll hit way past 240 whp with 12:5:1 compression ratio. i think you could hit 260+ with a good race header, and with an rbc port matched to a bdl 70mm throttle body.

I know there hard to find and kind of pricey but being that you have an A2 have you thought about hunting down a set of IPS Cams ? Those may help your numbers even more IMO . :mwink:

sweet build thread man! Did you ever call up Skunk2 with your cam issues? They are known to be very good with customer service..They should take care of you on that one. Also I don't know if you have purchased pistons yet, but I see you chose the 12.5:1 CP's, I have the same one but I'm bored out to 87.5mm.

If you're still on the hunt for pistons, call up James @ IPG Parts in Orlando. He's one of the largest CP distributors, he hooked me up large on my pistons.

if this is going to be your DD motor, then I can understand the H beams, which is what I went with. But if its a weekend/race motor, then why not go with lighter rods?

What oil pump are you using if you don't mind me asking? I would like to set my redline around 8500 as well and just wanting to know if a oem type s pump will suffice? thanks

shadowmd
08-19-2008, 04:15 AM
yea the a2 is supposed to be good to 8800-9000 i believe

talonXracer
08-19-2008, 06:10 AM
Make sure you order the latest PRB oil pump, use the part# from the 06'typeS.
Also remember that if you are adding a set of cams and high spring rate valve springs as well, that the oil pressure at the #5 cam cap is only 3-4psi at idle when fully warmed up. No wheres near enough pressure to prevent abnormal wear. Several Kseries have been showing up at the shop lately and the heads needed to be replaced due to non-symmetrical camshaft bore wear.

High lift springs and cams(like Junk2) will greatly shorten the lifespan as there is enough spring pressure and ramp rate to overcome the oil pressure. This causes the cams to ride against the aluminum cam shaft bores and wear very quickly. This accelerated bore wear now causes the cams to rock in the bores, wearing the chain, sprockets and bores even more.

classiccelica
08-19-2008, 09:25 AM
well what springs and cams would be better for that type of wear symtom. I am planning on builing an a2 as well when the right opportunity comes along and would love to know this.

shadowmd
08-19-2008, 09:29 AM
just stay away from skunk2 stuff. i haven't had any issues really with their valve springs and my honda cams tho. the recent tct failure i had wasn't due to the valve train.

02EP3SI
08-26-2008, 07:00 PM
why not some I beam rods??? arent they a better choice for N/A motors?

Im sure it has something to do with you already having them. Just seems to be a little more safe to rev higher on N/A parts

shadowmd
08-28-2008, 09:25 AM
its my dd and i have heard from a few knowledgable sources the the h-beams are better for a daily driven car that experiences "cold" weather etc

talonXracer
08-28-2008, 09:42 AM
I have never heard of the "H" beam rods being better in cold climates. They are stronger, but a fair bit heavier as well. The stock rods are fairly strong, the rod bolts are the weak link. The usual use for the "H" beams is for boosted applications, and the "I" beam's for NA.

shadowmd
08-28-2008, 09:50 AM
hm....well i just went with what raz was using and he said they are pretty good. oo well got'em now. i don't beat the shit outta my car on a reg. basis, but i still like to have fun with it :mangel: but he said it was something about the forging process with the h-beams.....i duno remember exactly what....
