View Full Version : DIY: Garage Door Lip Install

Got this done tonight. It took about 2hrs from start to finish, which includes removing and re-installing the bumper.

Pics of the product as requested. (Comes in a plastic bag for $14.99 or so CDN)

http://www.homedepot.ca/wcsstore/HomeDepotCanada/images/catalog/fc7a81ed-23e6-438e-94f3-c348e5d5c41b_3.jpg

http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prodmap_941466_941466_10051_-15_10051_mode+matchallpartial_mode+matchall_0_0_le vel1_TAGO

First, remove the bumper. There are DIY's around on how to do that. 5 minute job.

Once you have the bumper off, find a good location to work on it. Get some tape and use it to mask off the place you want to install the trim. This will give you a line to work along when you are installing the double sided tape.

http://www.mts.net/~stlukacs/IMG_0993.JPG

Once the double sided tape is installed, begin installing the trim. Align the crease of the trim with the edge of the double sided tape. You can achieve a pretty nice line if you are careful.

http://www.mts.net/~stlukacs/IMG_0995.JPG

I did something a bit different than most other installs I have seen. Instead of using screws to give the lip extra hold, I used black zip ties. I drilled holes along the bottom of the trim through the bumper and ran the zip ties through. They snug up great and seem to cover more area than screws.

http://www.mts.net/~stlukacs/IMG_0996.JPG

Here's a pic of the finished product.

http://www.mts.net/~stlukacs/IMG_1003.JPG

Here's a pic on the car. I'll get some more when it's not dark out.

Haha, of course it looks cheap. It's a trim peice from home depot. I like it. It is actualy functioal. I scrape that part of my bumper alot and this would probly help out. Good write up but like he said earlier, what was the brand/part number of that trim peice you got?

^^^

Added pics of the lip material plus a link to the web site with part number. I also put a pic from today's autocross where you can see the lip in action, although it's a bit far away and obscured by cones. I will add another once I get time to get a pic.

This is going to be one of those mods that is hard to capture in a pic or two. If you see it in person, I bet it looks better than in the pics.

I like it. It looks nice, its cheap, creative, and anybody can do it. Two thumbs up from me.

I bet this would look amazing on a HFP front lip.....

Installed mine yesterday. I am happy with it. I think it looks really good for a $8 lip:mbiggrin: I did the zip tie approach Slip Angle did. The double sided tape didn't help at all and I didn't want to risk the screws falling off. I just now need to get the sticky clips for my 04 sides to mount on my 03. Will take pics tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Nice DIY, definitely a cheap mod. It does look a little out of place though. In for a pic of a lowered EP with a lip and this mod. I bet it could help a little for reduced drag and better mpg.

I just did the garage door lip.. I think it looks tight. it costed me about 30 bucks tho but I used screws with wingnuts and washers all along the lip. it was pretty time consuming but easy and I got every thing at ace hardware.

also, just my advice, I would advise against the garden lip unless your car is either slammed or has side skirts..other wise itll look super low in the front and super high on the sides and back..

the garage door lip seems like a good idea but as stated before doesnt it look kind of unproportional on 02-03 models especially without any side skirts/rear lip. especially on stock height? i want to do this but want other opinions before. anyway of garage lipping the whole car? lol

what kinda of double sided tape did you use? and you didnt have any problems drillling through rubber?

G-MaC!

I am tempted to do this on my HFP lip. Hmmm, garage lip or garden lip

EP3CHRiS
05-15-2011, 12:11 PM
i suggest not to use the garden. I was kinda crazy to buy a huge 4 inch lip...once i put it on, it tore off. My best advice would be to go with the smaller one, or Volvo lip it....But if you still want to go with the garden lip, i used self tapers, which made it pretty secure, but its really based on how you wanna do it. some people would prefer NOT to drill in there bumper, but i did. You can use double sided tape, but i'm not sure how much that lip would take if you were to scrap......Tell me what you go with, good luck...

G-MaC!
05-15-2011, 06:12 PM
Yeah, 4 inches is overkill for me. I used the smaller one.
