What brands do you all like and what are the prices like?

I think roof racks are kinda ugly, but super functional. I think it would come in handy though.

Do the roof racks dent or damage the roof in any way? I can't see where they would place the load on the sheet metal.

Get a good rack (ie Thule or Yakima), intall it properly and there's no problem. With the Thule kit (I'm sure Yak is similar) you order a "fit kit" that comes with custom rubber feet and clips designed specifically for each car. The rubber feet for ours straddle the rain gutter and the roof sheet metal on the door side of the gutters.

Look for tiny little triangular divots just behind your door seals on the roof where it wraps around... they are there to show you where to put your racks (Thule, anyway... not sure about Yakima instructions).

If you don't clean the area where the pads and clamps go, you can scratch your car. You can also over-tighten the rack... with Thule, you just tighten the racks until you see a slight bend down in the middle on your bars. If you get really tight and they don't bend, your foot spacing is a little too long.

On my EG, there were rub marks after having them on for 100K+ km, but nothing a bit of rubbing compound wouldn't fix.

I've got Thule's short roofline adapter, and it is really nice to have because it puts the rear bars that much farther back and your load will be more stable. It's a must for long items, like boats or windsurf boards.

You could always get the "universal" parts of the rack (ie the towers, bars, bike carrier) off of e-bay, then just order the fit kit new. Beyondbikes.com sells them for cheap.

craigslist; $250 for all. Got all 4 Qtowers, 48" Crossbars, Fairing and 2 High Roller Bike Racks(these alone are $199 a piece) all with Lock Cores. The only extra I had to buy were the Q6 and Q116 Clips that are EP3 Specific ($35each, $70 for the set.Only thing I paid Retail price)

I priced it on the Yakima site and it all came to $967, So piecing it together saves Monie$ for other parts/equipment. Takes longer but well worth it IMO. Just rattle can the plastic pieces flat black and its all new....

With or Without the Stretch Kit the recommended load is 100lbs. So I decided not to run it since Downhill bikes are under 50lbs(mine is just under 40lbs.). But if you have a boat or something long you should consider it.

If you got the patience you can piece it together. I got a deal from a med student that was selling his car.

Amen. I also tag ep3, enkei 92, rota grid just in case I find a good deal around SoCal. That's how I got my hood bra for $45 in good condition in which I could have low balled cuz that dude was just trying to get rid of it and it's not even his.

Seems like the tabs/clips in the sides are what attaches to the car. If they are adjustable then as long as its complete it should fit, that's assuming they are adjustable and the bars are the correct length for the ep3 roof.

Try contacting the manufacture to find out compatibility with the EP.

My roof rack was stolen about a week ago. It consisted of 4 of the older style Yakima Q-towers. Each tower had a lock from SKS. I also had a Yakima Sprocket Rocket, with yet another SKS lock on it. Luckily my road bike wasn't on the rack, but still... the rack is gone. All the locks were locked by the way. The way the thief stole it was... He either used a screw driver or pry bar, and bent the clips out. After bending out clips on the rack say, on both towers on the driver's side, the rack apparently will just come off. What pisses me off more than anything is that the thief won't even be able to sell it or use it, so he probably just threw it away. If you guys know how the Sprocket Rocket locks, then you'll know what I mean. http://yakima.com/shop/bike/top/sprocketrocket

Reason why I'm telling you guys this is, that I kept my rack on ALL THE TIME. My car was parked in a fairly wealthy neighborhood. Even with 5 SKS locks that were LOCKED, my shit still got jacked. For me, it was laziness, that's the only reason that I never took it off. If I ever get a rack again, it's not going to be on top of my car regularly... Unless it's the kind that locks into the rain gutter area on the roof.

Just saying, careful guys.

Sorry to hear man,
I have had my snowboard and snowboard holders stolen from on top of my car at the local slope's parking lot. I am super careful now, I opted for the older rack set up also to keep cost down in case something did happen. The Yakima SST towers and locks are cheaper than the q towers and all over ebay you can get clips for an EG that will allow you to run these towers on the EP (they never really made clips for the SST for the EP) since they discontinued that design. I think My set up cost me just over 200 bucks even with the stretch kit. I just needed it for my bike and snowboard.

Oh, wait, on my EP3?? I would never put a rack on that.

The ski rack on the STi is Thule bars and visor, with Inno RV racks. The Inno setup is literally the best and most user friendly setup I've ever used (and I've used numerous Thule and Yakima setups over the years). I only have it on the car during ski season (November-April). I take it off when I switch the Blizzaks out for the summer tires.

The rack on the Xterra is a Yakima Load Warrior on the factory crossbars. Yakima attachments for the wheel/tire, Hi-Lift, and shovel.

:heh:Here's my aesthetics only Yakima rack....maybe one day I'll use it for something.

I've had all types of rack systems on my cars for the past 10 years.
I was a rack buyer/installer for an independent outdoor retailer for 6 years....so I've pretty much installed every rack/accessory for Thule and Yakima.....
As much as I hate Q-towers and how they fit....they seem to work well.....Just keep them tight.
Mine stay on year round, as I use them for 3 different sports. About twice a year I take them apart and remeasure/remount them....
I wish our Ep's had factory mounts like the Mazda3 but whatever....

here's my setup
Q Clips, Q Towers, Stretch Kit (which I also hate)
Not sure which fairing as it has traveled between 4 cars.
(my advice about fairings is, get one that's a little shorter than they recommend....just in case you change cars.)
Kayak stackers
Copperhead and Boa Fork Mount bike racks.
High Roller Bike rack.
Powderhound Snowboard Rack
Rocketbox Pro 11 Cargo box....

That is all.

Looking to getting a roof rack for the style, as well as the functionality of it (looking to use it for snowboard trips during winter). However, I know nothing about roof racks at all!
I've done some little research and know that Thule makes a fit kit for our cars, part 400xt and 2121 I believe? And I know that I'll need cross bars as well as the snowboard attachment. I'll also be looking to get a wind deflector as well. Is there anything that I'm missing? Also, does anyone know of a good site to order these parts and ships to Canada for a reasonable price?

I've been looking at used roof racks locally and found this:

Is that a decent price? I'll also need to get the 2121 fit kit for the 400xt

Any response is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I just needed it for my bike and snowboard.

i just bought a yakima rack from garage sale it came with sst tower. do you still remember what kind of Y clips that will fit on ep3? the rock came of from 91 integra.

what kind of stretch kit? are you talking about Q stretch kit?

I'd figure I would throw down my specs (they should be exactly the same as jettadreams)

Yes, you'll need the 2121 fit kit (for the 400xt foot pack) which can be difficult and expensive to find. Check www.mountainairsports.com. 47" or 50" Thule square load bars will fit. Yakima, Inno, and Rhino all make racks as well, I'm just not familiar with specifics on them.

I'm not familiar with Yakima's Q system - but I'd imagine you need them for sure. The clips are what "grabs" onto your car.

just tossing this out there since its relevant- i have a set of thule racks- cross bars, feet, fit kit, and wind deflector sitting in my garage. picked it up last winter and used it once with the lack of snowfall. i recently picked up a DD so i no longer need the racks. looking to get $300 for everything. PM if interested

Are Thule's better than Yakima roof racks?

I got a Surco roof rack from 4wheelonline. I bought mounting adapters so that I can fit it on my Thule crossbars.

Try a Seasucker rack. The idea of a suction cup mount sounds scary at first, but they're incredibly resilient. Just clean the spot on the roof before suctioning & you're good to go.
