Alright guys, I'm bored. I want a project. I'm risking my authentic mugen radiator duct kit to make a mold to produce accurate replicas. No more waiting, no more praying for pics of updates. I'm ordering the stuff i need to make the mold tomorrow. I already started on the wind deflector part of the radiator kit.
Heres a pic of what I've done so far, its not very much... but atleast its started

I'm not sure about making molds, but I could make a 1 off replica of that pretty well but it would take some trimming.
Wrap it in saran wrap and then coat it in loads of vaseline and buy some stretchy fleece cloth; lay that over the vaseline on one side and press it firm and it should stick to the vaseline, then brush on fiberglass resin or jelly and let it dry and it'll make a firm shell, pull it off. Go to autozone or something and you can buy lengths of fiberglass cloth, the matting shit sucks and its too hard to work with. Get the kind thats weaved toether.
Lay that over and use more fiberglass resin, i'd probably do 2 layers. If you do 2 layers do them all at once, the increased heat from doing it all at once will make it stronger.

thanks for the suggestions. If my method doesn't work i will consider that. Due to the nature and bends of these parts especially the deflector.. i need something that can easily bend. This is why i will make a latex mold and a plaster mother mold. The plaster mother mold will give me the strength and confinement i need while casting. I can then remove the latex mold from the plaster mold and peel off the flexible/durable latex mold off the plug. I really think this way will work, we shall see soon

yeah that would work.
I've never made a mold before so I don't have any suggestions for that.
What are you going to pour in the mold?

Good luck brotha. Tons of respect for taking it upon yourself to try this.

08-05-2008, 02:28 PM
ya guys... after thinking bout this for many hours. I think I will have to make a silicone mold for the actual duct and do the latex mold for the deflector. Really didn't want to mess with silicone because its the most expensive, hardest to mix, and hardest to pour. I have confidence tho.

Thanks for all the support guys.

you might want to look into expandable foams depending on what you're going to be pouring in the molds.
You can make a box of wood and place the object in there and spray expandable foam inside of it, pop the box off and cut the foam in half and you'll have a 2 piece mold that you can use multiple times.
If you're doing anything really hot though it might be an issue.
edit: I did some research and i found this page to be fairly informative http://www.jgreer.com/mold_making_101.htm

WELP.... i kno why wayne hasn't produced them yet. Me and v1c10us have spent bout 7hours on AIM talking bout ways to actually make this work. We have gone through bout 15 mock ups. Picture trying to thick in 3D in a mold with a shit ton of issues that I care not to discuss simply b/c its too overwhelming for me at this point.

Mad shout out to v1c10us for the help, I suggest you guys thank him, because this would have prolly not produced a good product without his help. Cheers to you man.

Bottom line- thanks v1c10us..... and dont let this lil rectangle fool you.... its a complete biotch to figure out

Yeah for real though, who would have thought making a mold for a rectangle with a few lips on it would be so downright difficult.

Not to steal Ron's idea or project, but me and MOOGEN are currently working on making a mold out of one of my radiator ducts. We have been doing body work for awhile and have a pretty good idea of how the process will be worked out. From the mold, we will produce several versions of the duct only in FRP versions and one CFRP version for myself, which will be fitted onto USDM bumpers ONLY.

However, due to the copyright issues and the International Copyright Infringement Act as well as the United State's copyright laws, WE WILL NOT PRODUCE THIS FOR RETAIL SALE.

In other words, as soon as we are done with the project, we will destroy the mold and pretend it never happened. On the bright side, I have plans of selecting about 5 people that are willing to donate their stock USDM bumpers for research and development in our project. The cutting, trimming, fitting, prepping, and body work will be done by myself. MOOGEN will do the paint work if necessary. As soon as we get started, I will create a separate thread discussing the theories, plans, and our project.

Please do not contact me or MOOGEN @ this time.
